McGrath comes from behind to win in playoff Dunn takes first with back to back birdies
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Oxford, Pennsylvania on May 3-4 for the Philly Jr. Challenge at Wyncote Golf Club. This event was the first time the HJGT had been in the Philadelphia area. Winners in all divisions received an invitation to the 2014 Tour Championship and Mid-Season Invitational. The top ten finishers received points towards end of the year honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings were awarded to the field as well.
The final round of the Philly Jr. Challenge in the Boys 15-18 division was as exciting as it comes. Liam McGrath of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania made up a four stroke deficit to force a playoff against round one leader John Foley of Limerick, Pennsylvania. McGrath would win the sudden death playoff to cap off his comeback. McGrath posted rounds of 79 and 76 while Foley posted rounds of 75 and 80. McGrath ended up making three birdies on the weekend while Foley had four birdies all occurring in the first round. Rounding out the top three was Kellen Jordan of Spring Lake, New Jersey. Jordan improved his first round score by two strokes to finish with an 81 and 79 for a 160 total. Jordan got his lone birdie in the second round on the par 4 11th hole after making a 20 foot putt.
The Girls 15-18 division was won by Grace Dunn of Brookfield, Wisconsin. Dunn made back to back birdies on holes 13 and 14 to help secure the win. Dunn posted scores of 79 and 77 with the help of three total birdies. Finishing in second place was Esther Park of Wilmington, Delaware. She came out in the second round firing. She was most improved after carding a first round of 84 and following it up with a 75. Park got her two lone birdies on the back nine of the second round. Samantha Fritzinger of Zionsville, Pennsylvania finished in third place by posting rounds of 81 and 86. Fritzinger had one birdie that came in the first round and during round two she had seven pars.
The Boys 11-14 division was a close finish with first place coming down to a one stroke difference. Stephen Sul of Old Bridge, New Jersey ended up coming out on top. Sul was the day one leader after carding a 79 and was able to keep his lead by posting a 78 in round two. Sul would birdie three holes during the two rounds. William Mirams of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania finished in second place after posting scores of 81 and 77. He made a valiant comeback but came up just short. Mirams finished with one birdie. Trey Kuntz of Lancaster, Pennsylvania finished the weekend in third place. He improved his round one score of 85 by two strokes to fire an 83 during round two.
In a battle for first place in the Girls 11-14 division, consistency proved to be key. Morgan Hennessy of Bronxville, New York was able to outlast her competitor Allison Appleton of Millersville, Pennsylvania. Hennessy posted duel rounds of 90 to edge Appleton by two strokes. Hennessy ended up with eight pars. Appleton had rounds of 92 and 90 to take home second place. She ended the weekend with nine pars. The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2008 with the intention of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment.
