Wolf battles delays and Hayakawa in pursuit of Match Play Championship
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the first ever HJGT Match Play Championship on August 31-September 2 at Hawk’s Landing Golf Club in Orlando, FL. The event was highly competitive and physically demanding as the best of the best competed in two rounds of golf for three consecutive days. The champions in the Boys 15-18 Division, Boys 11-14 Division, and Girls 15-18 Division receive an exemption into a Florida Junior Tour event, an invitation into the 2013 Tour Championship and a $50 Kikkor Golf gift card. Top 15 finishers in each division will receive points that will go toward end of the year honors and awards.
The Match Play championship came down to the last holes for the Boys 15-18 Division winners. Both Josh Lewis of Lake Mary, Florida and Brett Beazant of Orlando, Florida, went at least 18 holes in every match-up throughout the tournament. Lewis and Beazant played three playoff holes in their respective quarterfinal matches just to reach the semifinals. The championship match-up was close all the way through, but Beaznat was unable to breakthrough and gain the lead. The margin between both competitors was never greater than two holes. Lewis was one up through 15 holes and was able to clinch the championship by winning the 17th hole, as Beazant unfortunately bogeyed the hole. This was the only match for both finalist where they did not have to play a full 18 holes.
In the Girls 15-18 Division Jordan Wolf of Lake Mary, Florida was the third seed coming into the start of match play and defeated Cristine Lee in the semifinals. Maho Hayakawa of Mexico City, Mexico, the number one seed in the tournament, defeated Kelsie Belan in the semifinals to play Jordan Wolf in the final round. The championship match was all square after 16 holes. The players were set to tee off on the 17th until thunder and lightning struck the area for a 45 minute delay. Wolf eventually won the 17th hole, giving her a 1 hole lead with 1 hold left to play. The players were called back into the clubhouse because of thunder and lightning again for a 20 minute delay. The championship came down to the 18th hole, where Hayakawa’s 3rd shot splashed into the water, securing Wolf’s championship as she was able to find the green on her 3rd shot.
Things were back and forth between Daniel Core of Sorrento, Florida, and Ray Navis of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida for the Boys 11-14 Division. Navis started strong and was two strokes up through four holes. However, Core took three of the next five holes to take a one hold lead through the front 9. Navis answered on the 10th hole with a birdie to make the match all square. Core eventually took control of the match and secured the title of Match Play Champion on the 17th when Navis was unable to answer.
Anne Yu, from Lake Mary, Florida, earned the first place seed for the Match Play tournament rightfully so, winning the final round over Mimi Chen for the Girls 11-14 Division. Yu was trailing to Chen, from Longwood, Florida, in the Championship Match by one hole after the front nine. Yu was able to win three of the last 8 holes to secure the title.
