Columbus Junior Open at Cumberland Trail

On July 16th and 17th 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Pataskala, OH to host the Columbus Junior Open at the Cumberland Trail Golf Club. The course was relatively flat, but held plenty of hazards and bunkers to keep the players challenged. Saturday was warm and sunny with a few rain drops in the middle. Sunday held blue skies and was a bit warmer. The winners in all six age divisions will receive an automatic bid to the National Championship on December 3rd and 4th, 2016. The weekend was unbeatable all around and the top ten finishers also received points towards end year honors, which include state teams, all HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
Boys 16-18 Division

In the boys 16-18 division, Jack Funderburg of Westerville, OH held on to the lead after a two under score of 70 in day one to take home the first place trophy. Funderburg had a day two score of 75 for a two-day total of 145 and a one stroke lead. He had 5 birdies in the tournament. Closing in on Funderburg was Grant Williams of Grove City, OH. Williams finished with a total score of 146. He had two solid days to bring in a score of 73 for both days. Williams had 7 birdies and one eagle in the tournament. David Chapman of Washington, PA came in third place. Chapman had a first day score of 73 and a second day score of 76. His two day total was 149 with 6 birdies in the tournament. This was quite the competitive group of boys and they all played very well both days.
Boys 14-15 Division

In the boys 14-15 age division, it was another close battle, but Cameron Casto of Galena, OH came out on top. Casto had a first round score of 75 and a second round score of 76. His total score was 151 to hold on to the first place trophy by one stroke. Jarrod Teeter of Johnstown, OH came in second place. Teeter had a total score of 152. He brought in a first round score of 74 and a second round score of 78. Gregor Meyer of Pittsburgh, PA came in third place. Meyer brought in a 79 both days. He had a total score of 158.
Boys 11-13 Division

In the boys 11-13 age division, Jack Urban of Pittsburgh, PA took home first place. Urban had a round one score of 80 and a round two score of 84. His total for the tournament was 164. Andrew Poon of Venetia, PA took home second place. Poon had a round one score of 85 and cut off 4 strokes in round two for an 81. He had a total score of 166. Collin Zlotek of Depew, NY took home third place. Zlotek had a first round score of 86, and a lower score of 84 for the second round. His total score was 170. All of the boys in the 11-13 age division held strong and made it a close competition.
Girls 14-18 Division

In the girls 14-18 division, Ashely Flynn of Dublin, OH held strong for first place. Flynn brought in a two low scores of 77 and 78. Her tournament total was 155. Morgan Pankow of New Albany, OH and Hailey Scott of Hilliard, OH tied for second place with a total score of 164. Pankow had a first round score of 84 and cut off 4 strokes for an 80 the second round. Scott had a first round score of 78 and a second round score of 86. Alexandra Cardi of Delaware, OH came in third place. Cardi had a first round score of 87 and cut off 6 strokes for an 81 in round two. Her tournament total was 168. This group of girls were among some of the most competitive. They kept it a very tight race from the beginning to the end.

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2008 with the intent of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Golfers who participate on the tour will compete in one of five age divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18, and Girls 11-13.
