Canongate Series #6 in Sharpsburg, GA

(September 3-5, 2016)

Cannons Fired off at Canongate

On September 3-5, 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Sharpsburg GA to host the Canongate Series #6 tournament junior tournament on The Lee course.  The 54 hole tournament had some awesome memories of low scores and challenging tee shots. Saturday’s weather was nice and cool with overcast conditions. Jaden Hill was the only golfer to shoot an even par round of 72 to lead the first round in the 16 – 18 age division. Sunday turned into a cool sunny day in the high 80s to cool off the golfers and allowed them to ho low in round two. Isaac Hergott and Jake Nigrl both shot 70 to put them in contention to contend for the lead.  Sunday displayed perfect weather for all golfers to fire back to creep up on the leaders.

In the Boys 16-18 age division, Jaden Hill of Newnan, Georgia set the bar with a score of 72. Trailing behind was Lorenzo Elbert Jr. from East point, Georgia trailing 2 strokes behind the leader. Scores progressively got better throughout the Labor Day weekend. On Sunday, Jaden Hill shot 6 over par 78 to fall out of the lead. Lorenzo stayed consistent with a 74, while Isaac shot a 2 under 70 to share the lead. The 54 whole tournament closed out on Labor Day with a sudden death playoff between Jaden Hall and Isaac Hergott. Both players stated “The nerves were really getting to them on the 10th tee box.” The playoff ended quickly as Jaden hit his approach to within 2 feet of the whole. He tapped in for birdie and claimed victory at the Canongate Series #6 tournament.

In the Boys 14-15 division, Nicklaus Gibson shot a one over par 73 to lead the field on Saturday. Sam Brummett positioned himself behind Gibson with a round one score of 78. Brummet is a humble junior golfer who believed in his swing throughout the tournament and proved that having a positive attitude will pay off in the end. Brummett shot a final round score of 74 to defeat Gibson by one stroke to secure a victory at Canongate Series 6 to the Labor Day weekend.

In the Boys 11-13 age division,  Andrew Garger and David Ford went shot for shot in the first two rounds. Andrew shot a 77 and a 72 for the first two rounds, while David shot a 79 and 73 to trail by three strokes heading into the final round on Monday. These two players both possess great golf qualities but Garger ended up closing out the final round with a final round of two under par 70 to win by 19 strokes to claim the first place trophy. We hope to see these two golfers compete in the next tournaments to come.

In the Girls 13 under age division, Sierra Fink Morgan Ellison, and Liza Lapeyre battled neck and neck in the first two rounds, Morgan lead the division by one stroke going into the final round, but could not get the ball in the hole on Monday’s final round. Sierra took charge in the final round to shoot an 83 and clinched the first place trophy. All in all, the three Girls competed to the best of their abilities and can’t wait to play in the next tournament.

In the Girls’ 14-18 age division, Carol Pyon and Alejandra Ayala were tied after a round two total of 152. Although the course elevation make the club selection difficult, their short game proved to be great. In the end, Carol Pyon pulled away from Ayala with a nine stroke lead to win the Canongate series #6 title to close the tournament. These girls showed their competitiveness and both wanted to win yo secure a spot in the December champion. We look forward to seeing them battle it out again when this event arrives.
