Evans, GA (May 11-12) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour finally got perfect weather for a golf tournament this weekend in Evans, Georgia at the Bartram Trail Golf Club. The Augusta Junior Shootout was played under sunny skies with temperatures in the low 80s and the course was in great condition. Greens were firm and rolling fast as the juniors tried to conquer the undulating Bartram Trail. This tournament was ranked by the National Junior Golf Scorecard (NJGS), the South Carolina Junior Golf Association (SCJGA), and the Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA). Winners of all divisions at the Augusta Junior Shootout receive an invitation to the 2013 Tour Championship and the winner of the Boys 15-18 division receives AJGA Performance Stars. In addition, Top Ten finishers receive points towards end of the year honors which include state teams, All-HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.

The Boys 15-18 Division saw Hunter Dunagan from Martinez, GA win his first tournament of the season. Dunagan used an impressive 71 on day one and a one-over 73 on Sunday to seal the two shot victory. Dunagan had ten birdies over the weekend which was tops in his division, earning him the EFX Birdie Challenge bracelet. Dunagan also led in par four performance, averaging a 3.81 on all par fours. Chase Cale of Greenville, SC capped his season best second place finish with a 74-72 score for a two day total of 146 (+2). Cale carded eight birdies over the weekend which was second most in the division. Also coming in with a two day total of 146 (+2) was Jason Murphy from Augusta, GA. Murphy was Saturday’s leader after a two under 70, but couldn’t get it going on Sunday. Murphy also had a total of eight birdies for the weekend. Ryan Jacobs of Hoboken, GA won the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week award after improving his Saturday score by 16 strokes on Sunday.

The Girls 15-18 division came down to the wire as Jaelyn Tindal of Rock Hill, SC took home the trophy with a two shot victory at 164 (+20). Tindal led in Par 4 and Par 5 performance with an average of 4.56 and 5.40, respectively. Jaelyn also had a third best percentage of pars or better at 47.2%. Coming in second place was Sarah Harrison of Martinez, GA. Harrison shot an 86 on Saturday, but was in contention until the end on Sunday. Harrison hit her second shot on the par five ninth hole into the hazard and finished with an 80, and a second place finish. Harrison did lead in birdies with two and tied in pars with 17. Jodee Tindal, younger sister of the champion, came in at third place with a two day total of 168 (+24). Jodee was the leader after Saturday’s round of 80, but she found trouble on the par three seventh and fell out of contention. Jodee Tindal tied Sarah Harrison with the division best 17 pars. Harrison’s two birdies were enough to win her the EFX Birdie Challenge. Alexa Luszcz won the Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week after improving her score by six shots.

The Boys 11-14 Division saw a consistent top ten finisher finally breakthrough for his first victory. Sam McGee, the Charlotte, NC native, used consistency to shoot 75 both days for a six over total of 150. McGee had a 4.19 par 4 performance which led the division. McGee also led with an impressive 22 pars over the weekend. Alex Markham of Dacula, GA was four shots off the winner with a two day total of 154 (+10). Markham led in par 5 performance by averaging an impressive 4.80. Markham was second in his division for most birdies with five. Third place was claimed by Andrew Chong. The Grovetown, GA native was consistent all weekend finishing with a 78 on Saturday and a 79 on Sunday. The EFX Birdie Challenge was won by Preston Wagaman who finished with 7. The Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week went to Brandon Cho who saw a 13 stroke improvement. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the southeast as well as Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
