Player Spotlight: Myla Kumar

From February 24-25, 2024, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Palm Beach County Junior Open. The tournament was made up of a 36-hole format and with a field of six divisions, including the Boys 16-18 Division, Boys 14-15 Division, Boys 11-13 Division, Boys U10 Division, Girls 14-18 Division and Girls U13 Division. Myla Kumar, from Pompano Beach, FL, was the first-place finisher of the Girls U13 Division. Kumar scored 88 and 86, giving her a combined total of 174 strokes.

We had the chance to catch up with Myla after her win at Palm Beach.

What do you enjoy most about the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour?

– “I enjoy that HJGT features some very nice courses, and how there are two-day events.”

Favorite memory on the tour so far?

– “I was able to shoot a personal best and then break it while making new friends.”

How did it feel to get your most recent win on the tour?

– “While I did not play my best golf, I had an excellent back nine to finish strong. That has helped me build confidence.”

What is the competition like when you play on the tour? 

– “It varies in Youth 13, but I love that you can play in a higher division and challenge yourself.”

How do you prepare for a tournament?

– “I practice and I also relax as I just want to have fun.”

What are your career aspirations?

– “I am eleven years old, so I am not really sure yet. But, I think I might want to be a doctor so that I can help people.”

What is your dream college and why?

– “I aspire to attend Harvard or Columbia because they are great universities and I want to follow in my parents’ footsteps.”

Favorite athlete (any sport) and why?

– “Definitely Rory McIlroy because he is from the United Kingdom like me and he is such a great golfer and always so calm.”

What is your dream course to play on?

– “St. Andrew’s and Pebble Beach”

What do you want people to know about you?

– “I want people to know that I would like to be a really good golfer, but I’m really more focused on being a strong student and good person.”

Myla has been killing it on the course and off lately. We can’t wait to see what she does the rest of this year on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour!
