Player Spotlight: Luke Flynn

What is better than looking good on the course? The obvious answer would be playing well. But for one junior golfer, it is singing Christmas songs in his head. For 12-year-old Luke Flynn, he admits that when he is playing well, he sings Christmas songs in his head and it works. As the old adage goes, “If ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

Flynn is from Melrose, Massachusetts, and he has been nothing short of impressive in his time on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. In addition to his impressive resume, Flynn is also an avid sneaker-head. He told us that his favorite sneakers are “Air Jordan sneakers, specifically the UNC colorway. (And if you’re a sneaker-head like me you’ll understand).” Well, the way that Flynn has been playing certainly does justice to the work ethic of one Michael Jordan. In the 9 tournaments that Flynn has played in on Tour, he has placed in top-3 in eight.

Luke Flynn Wins The Boston Junior Open

Most recently, Flynn placed first at the Boston Junior Open, where he shot +22 – two strokes ahead of the runner-up. When we asked how he prepared for the tournament, he responded, “nothing special, I just go to the range the day before and practice the things I need to work on. In this case, my putting was off going into the tournament, so I spent some extra time on that. Usually, the day of the tournament, I go to the range to warm up, but this time I just putted on the practice green.”

The adjustment seemed to work for Flynn as he captured first place in Boston. Flynn talked about what it meant to win this event.

“It felt amazing to win,” Flynn said. “I had an awesome come-from-behind victory in my most recent win. I was six shots back from the leader going into the back nine of the second day. Then, I turned it on, I shot a +2, 38 with a birdie on 18 to seal the deal. In all of this I had no idea what was happening, and I was just trying to play my best. That’s what happens in golf, you’re six shots back and the next thing you know, you’re winning.”

Just goes to show all junior golfers that there is a reason why tournaments are two days. Flynn was 6 shots behind the leader at the end of the first day, but he didn’t give up. He went out there on Sunday and won the tournament. The multi-day event is what Flynn enjoys most about HJGT, saying that he “like[s] trying to beat [his] score from the previous day. [He] also love[s] to know what [he] hits on a certain hole before and try to improve.”

What’s Next For Luke Flynn

When asked what the future looks like for Flynn, he stated “to be recruited to a D1 college (specifically UNC or Yale).” He went on to explain that he, of course, would love to go pro one day.

“Also, I mean everyone’s goal is to go pro and win on the PGA tour and I’m no different.” Flynn said. “Also, I want to go to the Masters someday, not to win, just to play in it. My career goals are no different from everyone else though.”

The 12-year-old’s goals are admirable, and we are sure that he will be able to reach them if he keeps singing those Christmas songs in his head when he plays. Best of luck to Luke Flynn for the rest of his season here on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.
