Player Spotlight: Hunter Duncan with a dominant win

This young golfer had himself a day as he was able to blow away the competition with an easy win.

Hunter Duncan put up a dominant performance as he shot -1 at the Sandy Burr Junior Open. In his impressive victory, Duncan was able to separate himself by 6 strokes from his second-place competitor AJ Bodnar who finished with +5 for the tournament.

Catching up with Hunter Duncan

In Duncan’s spectacular outing, he shot great in both rounds of the tournament with 72 strokes in the first round. At first, the race for first was tight as Bodnar had shot 74 in his first round. But, Duncan was able to pull away in the second round shooting 71 and Bodnar shooting 75 to end the day.

We asked Duncan how it felt to get his recent win and Duncan said, “It felt good to be at the top of the leaderboard going into the final round and I was pleased with my very consistent play to hold off any challengers” Duncan likes that HJGT can provide local access to events across the country. This makes it a lot easier for him to get there with less travel. Duncan also appreciates how easy it is to go through the application and entry process compared to other junior golf tours.

When it comes to preparation for tournaments, Duncan has a consistent routine before a tournament round. Duncan told us, “I hit a few balls with several clubs on the range, focus on wedges and short irons, and then put more time into chipping and putting.  For practice in general, I focus most of my time on the short game and wedges given how important those aspects are in tournament rounds.” If time permits, Duncan will also play 9-18 holes daily! But, if not, Duncan will be on the range or working on his short game for most of the day.

As far as the future goes, Duncan wants to continue to play golf in college at a high level and even go after a degree in business. Before his junior year, Duncan was focused on other sports as well. This took some time away from his golfing development and even his ability to play in golf tournaments. Duncan said, “As a result, my national ranking is not indicative of my ability or potential.” The work ethic Duncan puts out is tremendous and he is extremely confident that he will be a great student, teammate, and player for a team in college.
