Over the weekend of March 16-17, the Winter Garden Spring Junior Open was played at Stoneybrook West Golf Club in Winter Garden, Florida. In our boys 16-18 age bracket, Angelo Martinez shot 5-under to win the tournament. Martinez brought in scores of 67 and 72 for a combined total of 139 strokes. This was Angelo’s first tournament of the calendar year, but he has been playing on the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour since 2022. We caught up with the 15-year-old from Albuquerque, New Mexico after his win.
How did it feel to get your most recent win on the tour?
“It felt really good to get my spring season off to a good start. We worked really hard over the offseason so it’s always good to see progress when the work goes in. My team at GPC all showed up and showed out. HJGT always puts on good events with talented fields.”
How do you prepare for a tournament?
“I am blessed to be a student at the Performance Golf Academy in Ridgefield, CT. My team of coaches, doctors, and teammates do a great job preparing us for each event. I am surrounded with the best coaches and technology in the game so that really helps me grow my game. My team has some really good golfers on it so we push each other every day. My teammate Andrew Hahn was a close 2nd in this tournament. ”
What do you want people to know about you?
“I was born and raised in Albuquerque New Mexico. I am very proud of that. Leaving my family and friends in NM was difficult but the opportunity to grow my game on the east coast was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I work hard to make them all proud back home.”
Angelo has been killing it on the course so far this year, and we can’t wait to see what he does in his next tournament!
