From Saturday, May 4 – Sunday, May 5, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Long Island Junior Open at The Woods at Cherry Creek in Riverhead, NY. The tournament was made up of a 36-hole, two-day format and the field was made from all six divisions that included the Tiger Woods Division Boys 16-18, Will Smith Division Boys 14-15, Ernie Els Division Boys 11-13, Bryson DeChambeau Boys 10 and Under, Justin Timberlake Division Girls 14-18, and the Justin Rose Division Girls 13 and Under. Due to inclement weather, the second round of the tournament was incomplete for the Ernie Els Division, the Bryson DeChambeau Division, and the Justin Rose Division.
Stephen Sloan of New York, NY was the champion in the Tiger Woods Division, as he finished out the weekend very consistently, by finishing with 77 strokes on Saturday and 77 strokes again on Sunday. Nathan Wright of Sagaponack, NY took home the second as he finished just two strokes behind Sloan. Just two strokes behind Wright was third-place finisher Richard Federico of Remsenburg, NY.
Leading off the Will Smith Division was Gavin Girard of East Setauket, NY with 157 strokes. The silver went to Justin Fox of Larchmont, NY with 165 strokes. Rounding out the division was a two-way tie for third. Todd Freifeld of Mamaroneck, NY and Andrew Flynn of Monroe, CT each finished with 180 strokes.
Based off their performance of the first round and part of the second, Zachary Munno of Stamford, CT captured the gold. Dean Muratore of Dix Hills, NY got the silver. There was a tie for third, as Angad Manaise of Stamford, CT and Matthew DiFiore of Malverne, NY each earned the bronze medal.
Katie Dzialga of Greenwich, CT was on her game this weekend as she earned the top spot in the Justin Timberlake Division. She finished out the two-day tournament with 149 strokes. Skye Bruan of Scarsdale, NY earned second with 168 strokes. Just two strokes behind her fell third-place winner Sophia Li of New York, NY.
It was a tight first round, but Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, NY earned the top spot in the Justin Rose Division by finishing with 90 strokes. Catherine Andino of Port Washington, NY finished right behind her with 91 strokes. Rounding out the division was Lia Huang of Great Neck, NY with 101 strokes.
Boys 10 Under
Zachary Berger of Remsenburg, NY captured the gold in the Bryson DeChambeau Division as he finished with 89 strokes after the first round. Jack Talbot of Cutchogue, NY earned the silver with 115 strokes.
