STATE COLLEGE – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Toftrees Junior Open at the Toftrees Golf Resort from July 1-2. Boys and girls travled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions; Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
First place in the boys 16-18 division went to Trevor Todd from Indiana, PA. Trevor has been playing in HJGT tournaments since 2018 and has 12 Top 5 finishes under his belt. This past weekend he brought in scores of 74 and 70 totaling 144 strokes to take the win. Will Campbell from Mars, PA and Dallas Inch from York, PA tied for the runner up honors on the weekend. Campbell brought in scores of 77 and 69 while Inch brought in scores of 74 and 72. Both players finished the weekend with a total of 146 strokes.
In the boys 14-15 division, Chase Yenser from Douglassville, PA was our first place finisher. With seven birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 73 and 74 for a total of 147 strokes. Yenser is an up-and-coming player on the tour and this was his second tournament win of the year. He is currently within the Top 50 of HJGT point rankings. The runner up honors went to Colby Komancheck from Royersford, PA. Komancheck did a great job on the course this past weekend with a round 1 score of 77 and a 76 in round 2. His final score of the tournament was 153. With one eagle and three birdies on the weekend, newcomer Matt Mueller from Gibsonia, PA finishes up the top three honors. His final score was 155 strokes.
In his first HJGT tournament, Barron Bitar from Pittsburgh, PA placed first in the boys 11-13 division. With scores of 85 and 84 along with two birdies on the weekend, he had a total of 169 strokes. Sam McLanahan from Hollidaysburg, PA places as the runner up honors. His scores of 98 and 88 gave him a total of 186 strokes. Sam is in the Top 50 for HJGT point rankings. Finishing up the top three honors was Jacob Davis from Bellefonte, PA with a final score of 189 strokes.
Newcomer Cora Hirz from Fairview, PA was the first place winner in the girls 14-18 division. This was Cora’s second event of the year and her first win. She had one eagle on the weekend and scores of 91 and 44. Hirz took the win with a total of 135 strokes. Ava Calandra from Pittsburgh, PA takes home the runner up honors. Her scores of 92 in round 1 and 47 in round 2 gave her a total of 139 strokes. Paige Ponteous from Butler, PA finishes up the top three honors with a final score of 148.
To finish off a great weekend, Olivia Koshko from State College, PA was crowned champion of the girls under 13 division. She brought in an exceptional scorecard for the weekend. Her round 1 score of 89 and 42 in round 2, gave her a final score of 131. This follows a win at the Summer College Prep Series at Penn State where she had a score of 188.
