WAYLAND – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Sandy Burr Junior Open at the New Sandy Burr Country Club from July 22-23. Boys and girls traveled from all over the globe to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Boys U10 and Girls 14-18.
Leading the boys 16-18 division was Andrew Marcotte from Hanover, MA. Marcotte brought in an exceptional scorecard for the weekend. With 10 birdies on the weekend, he put up scores of 70 and 76. Andrew finished the weekend with a score of 146 strokes to take the win. This was his sixth Top 10 finish of 2023. Will Giaquinto from Hamden, CT took home the runner up honors. In round 1 he scored a 73 and a 74 in round 2 totaling 147 strokes, giving him his best score so far this year. Robert Zyskowski III finishes up the top three honors. His scores of 76 and 72 gave him a final score of 148 strokes.
In the boys 14-15 division, Jacob Carlson from Chelmsford, MA finished the weekend in first place. With seven birdies, he had a round 1 score of 74 and a round 2 score of 75, ending the weekend with 149 strokes. This is Carlson’s fourth event of 2023 and his third win. Davies Subari from Jakarta, Indonesia placed as the runner up honors on the weekend. Subari had one eagle, two birdies and scores of 76 and 77. Davies finished the weekend with a total score of 153 strokes. Finishing up the top three honors was John Grimes from Needham, MA bringing in a scorecard of 156 strokes.
In the boys 11-13 division, Yize Gong from Hangzhou, China finished the weekend as our champion after playing in his first HJGT tournament. On round 1 he scored an 81 and scored an 85 in round 2. Gong took home the win with a total of 166 strokes. The runner up honors went to Noah Dasilva from Stoneham, MA. He brought in scores of 88 in round 1 and 89 in round 2 for a combined total of 177 strokes. Tied for the top three honors was Lucas Flynn from Melrose, MA and Jeremy Zhang from Lincoln, MA with a fnal score of 179 strokes. Both players are in the Top 30 players of HJGT point rankings.
Fanke Sun from Hangzhou, China participated in his first HJGT event this past weekend and was the champion of the boys under 10 division. Sun brought in a fantastic scorecard. With a score of 89 in round 1 and a 90 in round 2. Fanke ended the weekend with a total of 179 strokes.
To finish off a great weekend, Mekhala Costello from Canton, MA was the first place finisher for the girls 14-18 division this past weekend. Costello has been playing with the HJGT since 2020 and has placed in the Top 10 in each tournament she’s participated in. This weekend she was able to secure the victory with a weekend total of 157 strokes. Sophie Lim from Boston, MA brought in her best score of the year and took home the runner up honors. Lim put up scores of 86 in round 1 and 83 in round 2 totaling 169 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Camille DeStefano from Belmont, MA brought in a total of 172 strokes for the weekend.
