WARREN – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Northern Ohio Junio Open at the Avalon Lakes Golf Course from June 17-18. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had four divisions: Boys 16-18, 14-15, Boys 11-13 and Girls 14-18.
Taking the lead in the boys 16-18 division was Sion Park from Westlake, OH. Park is an up-and-coming player on the tour and did a great job on the course this past weekend. With 11 birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 71 in round 1 and 73 in round 2. Sion secured the win with an even score of 144 strokes, his best score since joining earlier this year. The runner up honors went to Kai Carlson from Pittsburgh, PA. He put up scores of 70 and 77 totaling 147 strokes for the weekend. Kai has been playing with HJGT since 2019, this was his 19th Top 10 finish. Longtime HJGT player, Ryan Steigerwald from Mars, PA finishes up the top three honors with a total of 151 strokes. Steigerwald is currently within the Top 50 of HJGT point rankings.
In the boys 14-15 division, Cameron Stafford from Medina, OH was our first place finisher this past weekend. Stafford is a newcomer to the HJGT, this was his second tournament and his second win. His scores of 88 and 79 gave him a weekend total of 167. With a total score of 172 strokes, Nathan Chege took home runner up honors. Chege, from Olmsted Falls, OH joined the HJGT this year and this was his 3rd Top 2 finish. He is currently within the Top 15 in HJGT point rankings. Finishing up top three honors, in his first HJGT tournament of the year was Luke Voinovich from Hudson, OH. Luke put up scores of 95 and 93 totaling 188 strokes.
Trent Riedel from Medina, OH was our champion in the boys 11-13 division. This was Riedel’s second HJGT tournament of the year and his second win. He brought in scores of 84 in round 1 and 80 in round 2. Trent finished off the weekend with a total of 164 strokes.
To finish off a great weekend, newcomer Eliza Mercer from Gahanna, OH took home first place in the girls 14-18 division. This was Mercer’s second HJGT tournament, she did a fantastic job on the course. With four birdies on the weekend, she put up scores of 89 and 79. Eliza finished the weekend with a total of 168 strokes. Ava Liburdi and Luciana Masters both from Hermitage, PA tied for the runner up honors on the weekend. Both players were able to bring in impressive scores of 175 strokes.
