EAST FALMOUTH – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the New England Junior Open at the Falmouth Country Club from May 20-21. Boys and girls traveled from around the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys U10, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
In the boys 16-18 division, Ryan Keyes from Wellesley, MA placed first after securing a playoff win against Jake Portugal. Keyes finished the weekend with a score of 77 for round 1 and 70 for round 2, ending the weekend with 147 strokes. This is Keyes’ first win since joining the HJGT in 2021 and his 9th top 10 win. Jake Portugal from Ridgefield, CT placed as our runner up honors. Bringing in scores of 74 and 73 his weekend total was 147 strokes. Portugal has been playing in HJGT tournaments since 2019 and this is his 22nd top 10 win. Finishing up top three honors was Druv Campanella from Needham, MA with a score of 150 strokes.
First place winner in the boys 14-15 division went to Angelo Martinez from Albuqerque, NM after he brought in an even scorecard this past weekend. With seven birdies, he put up scores of 79 for round 1 and 72 for round 2. Martinez finished with a total of 151 strokes securing him his second first place win in a row. With a round 1 score of 79 and 74 for round 2, Will Spencer from Fairfield, CT places as runner up honors. Spencer finished the weekend with a total of 161 strokes. Joseph Hansen from Cumberland Center, ME placed in the top three honors with a score of 161 strokes.
Longtime HJGT player and first place HJGT point leader, Liam Rotatori from Stamford, CT was the first place champion in the boys U10 division this past weekend. Rotatori has played in 65 HJGT tournaments and placed first in over half of them. He was able to bring home another win with a round 1 score of 92 and round 2 score of 85 for a total of 177 strokes. Liam will defend his title at the 54 Hole Conneticut Junior Open this coming up weekend.
In the girls 14-18 division, Cristiana Greene from Bedford Hills, NY finished the weekend as our first place winner. Greene has been playing with HJGT since 2020 and has 24 tournaments under her belt. This past weekend she was able to take her first win with just 159 strokes, her best score yet. The runner up honors went to Katie Cullen from Uxbridge, MA with scores of 97 and 87, she finished off with a total of 184 strokes. With a score of 202 strokes, Emilee Ferguson from Sandy Hook, CT placed in the top three honors.
Emily Doe from Waban, MA led the girls U13 division this past weekend. In only her second HJGT tournament of the year, Doe was the first place winner. Putting up scores of 89 and 88, her weekend total was 177 strokes. Emily currently sits in 13th place in the HJGT point rankings. Grace Rotatori from Stamford, CT is a longtime HJGT player and has placed top 3 over 45 times, this weekend was no different when she took home runner up honors. Rotatori put up scores of 97 and 93, she ended the weekend with 190 strokes.
