Massachusetts Summer Junior Open at Green Hill

WORCESTER – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Massachusetts Summer Junior Open at the Green Hill Municipal Golf Club on July 1. Boys and girls traveled from around the globe to participate in the 18-hole tournament. The event had five divisions; Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
boys 16-18
In the boys 16-18 division, Jonathan Burke from Reading, MA placed first after a great day on the green. Burke shot two under with five birdies, bringing in a total score of 70 strokes. Jonathan is ranked 11th in the HJGT point rankings. The runner up honors went to Sean Roddy from Schenectady, NY. With four birdies, Sean had a total score of 74 strokes. This is Roddy’s third event of 2023 and his third Top 10 finish. Ethan Martin from North Wales, PA finishes up top three honors with three birdies and a total of 75 strokes.

boys 14-15
Taking the lead in the boys 14-15 division was Teddy Halpin from New York, NY. Halpin had an exceptional scorecard for the day. With two birdies, he brought in a score of 73 strokes to secure his first HJGT win. Teddy is ranked in the Top 20 of HJGT point rankings. With three birdies and a total score of 74 strokes, Hongtao Gu takes home the runner up honors. Gu, from Zhuhai, China is a newcomer to the HJGT. We applaud his efforts and look forward to seeing him play again at the Crystal Springs Summer Junior Open. Finishing up top three honors is Jacob Carlson from Chelmsford, MA with a total score of 76 strokes.

First place in the boys 11-13 division went to Dermot Duggan from Westborough, MA. Duggan brought in a score of 79 strokes. The runner up honors went to Yuxuan Ge from Shanghai, China. Ge had a total score of 87 strokes. This was the first HJGT tournament for both players, they played great on the course and we hope to see them on tour again soon.

girls 14-18
In the girls 14-18 division, Meijin Song from Beijing, China was the first place finisher for the day. Song brought in an exceptional scorecard for her first tournament of the year. With three birdies, she had a score of 73 strokes for the day. The runner up honors went to Jida Chiravachradej from Bangkok, Thailand. Jida had three birdies and brought in a score of 75 strokes. This follows an outstanding first place win at the Massachusetts Junior Open at Maplegate. Zhi Han Yue Liu from Chino Hills, CA finishes up top three honors with a score of 77 strokes.

girls 13 & under
To finish off a great day, Miao Zhuang from Shanghai, China was crowned the girls under 13 champion. Miao had two birdies and brought in a score of 76 strokes in her first ever HJGT tournament. With a score of 93 strokes, Caroline Cleary from Stonington, CT takes home the runner up honors. This was Cleary’s third event of the year and her third Top 3 finish. She is currently within the Top 20 of HJGT point rankings.
