BELLINGHAM – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Massachusetts Junior Open at the Maplegate Country Club from June 17-18. Boys and girls traveled from around the world to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.

Newcomer to the HJGT, Patrick Friel from Arlington, MA was our first place winner in the boys 16-18 division this past weekend. Patrick played a great game on the course and brought in an exceptional scorecard. With a round 1 score of 79 and a 73 for round 2, he finished off the weekend with 152 strokes. With a total score of 154 strokes, Max Baldwin placed as our runner up honors. Baldwin, from Tolland, CT has participated in seven HJGT tournaments, this past weekend was his fifth Top 2 win. Leo Dixon from Bedford, NH finishes up the top three honors. With scores of 78 for both days, he finished off the weekend with a total of 156 strokes.

In the boys 14-15 division, Kyle Beaudry from Madison, CT and Joseph Hansen from Cumberland Center, ME tied for first place. Both players had three birdies on the weekend, while Beaudry brought in scores of 84 and 77, Hansen brought in scores of 83 and 78 both had a combined total of 161 strokes. This was Kyle’s third first place win and Joseph’s second. Finishing up top three honors, with a total of 166 strokes was Brian Li. Li, from Newton, MA has played in 11 HJGT tournaments and has placed Top 10 in all of them.

In the boys 11-13 division, Charles Lans took home first place in his first tournament since 2022. Lans, from Westwood, MA brought in four birdies on the weekend along with scores of 79 in round 1 and 82 in round 2. He was able to secure the win with 161 strokes. The runner up honors went to Jeremy Zhang from Lincoln, MA. His scores of 97 and 91 gave him a combined total of 188 for the weekend. This was Jeremy’s fifth Top 2 win since joining in 2022.

Leading the girls 14-18 division was Jida Chiravachradej from Bangkok, Thailand. This was Jida’s first HJGT tournament, she did a great job on the course and brought in some low scores. With nine birdies on the weekend, she put up scores of 74 and 75. Jida was able to secure her win with 149 strokes. With a total score of 153 strokes and five birdies, June Doerr places as our runner up honors. Doerr, from Hampton Falls, NH has placed in the Top 10 in 10 of the 11 tournaments she has participated in. She is currently in the Top 15 for HJGT point rankings. Finishing up in top three honors was Riley Eames from Sandwhich, MA. Eames’ scores of 89 and 87 gave her a combined total of 176 strokes.

To finish off a great weekend, Hazel Hegstrom from Providence, RI was the first place winner in the girls under 13 division. Hazel is a newcomer to HJGT and played in her first tournament this past weekend. She scored an 88 in round 1 and 86 in round 2 totaling 174 strokes.
