SHELBYVILLE – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Major Championship at the Weissinger Hills Golf Course from June 3-4. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
Long time HJGT player, Nick Vilela from Washington, MO was the first place finisher for the boys 16-18 division this past weekend. Vilela has been playing with HJGT since 2018 and has over 30 tournaments under his belt. He was able to secure another win this weekend with seven birdies and a total of 144 strokes. Nick’s next event with the HJGT will be later this month as he will participate in the St. Louis Summer Junior Open. Runner up honors went to Christian Clements from Louisville, KY. Clements brought in scores of 70 for round 1 and 75 for round 2, he finished the weekend with a total score of 145. Finishing up top three honors, from Clinton, OH was Zachary Huscusson with a weekend score of 147 strokes.
In his first HJGT tournament of the year, Colton Woosley from Crestwood, KY led the boys 14-15 division. Woosley played a great game on the course this past weekend. With six birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 72 for both days. Woosley finished the weekend with 144 strokes to take home the champion title. With a final score of 145, Parker Andersen took the runner up honors for the weekend. Andersen, from New Melle, MO has placed in the Top 10 in almost all of his tournaments with the HJGT. Finishing up top three honors was Lyoto Bellon from Saint Louis, MO with a total score of 146.
In the boys 11-13 division, Grant Guetig from Louisville, KY was our first place winner. With six birdies on the weekend, he put up scores of 67 and 77. Guetig finished the weekend with an even score of 144 strokes. He is currently fifth in the HJGT point rankings. Griffin Jackson from Glasgow, KY took home runner up honors for the weekend. He brought in scores of 77 for round 1 and 70 for round 2 totaling 147 strokes. Finn Johnson from Louisville, KY and Andrew Perry from Winchester, KY tied for top three honors. Both players were able to bring in impressive scores of 149.
Leading the girls 14-18 division was Alexis Haller from Louisville, KY. With a round 1 score of 81 and 84 for round 2, she took home the first place win with 165 strokes. Haller has been playing with the HJGT since 2020 and has played in over 20 tournaments. The runner up honors went to Grace Soale from Lexington, KY. With scores of 89 and 79, she totaled 168 strokes for the weekend. Finishing up top three honors, with a total score of 171 was Grace Vernon from Louisville, KY. Soale and Vernon are both currently within the Top 100 for HJGT point rankings.
To finish off a great weekend, in the girls under 13 division, Carol Ann Mendenhall from Nicholasville, KY was crowned champion. Her scores of 74 and 80 along with five birdies gave her a total of 154 strokes, this was her 7th HJGT win in a row. The runner up honors went to Willa Borough from Lexington, KY. Borough put up scores of 79 for both days totaling 158 strokes. Kenzi England from Campbellsville, KY finishes up in the top three honors with a weekend total of 179.
