FREEPORT – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Major Championship at the Birdsfoot Golf Club from June 10-11. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys U10, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
In the boys 16-18 division, Thomas Caffarelli from Scottsdale, AZ finished the weekend as our champion. Caffarelli secured his victory after a playoff against Zachary Huscusson from Clinton, OH. Coming down the 18th fairway both players were neck and neck. After a par from Caffarelli and a birdie from Huscusson, the boys were forced into a playoff. Caffarelli took control of the playoff to be the champion for the weekend. This was Caffarelli’s second HJGT tournament of the year; earlier this month he placed 3rd at the Summer College Prep Series at Penn State. Huscusson finished the weekend with a scorecard of 143 strokes. We applaud his efforts in the playoff, his next tournament will be in July at the Cleveland Summer Junior Open.
Leading the boys 14-15 division was David DiGregory from Pittsburg, PA. DiGregory brought in a fantastic scorecard this weekend. With two birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 82 for both days. He finished the weekend with 164 strokes to take the win. David is an up-and-coming player on the tour, he is currently in the Top 10 for HJGT point rankings. Taking home the runner up honors was newcomer, Vinci Villella from Cranberry Township, PA. His score for the weekend was 175 strokes.
In the boys under 10 division, Liam Rotatori from Stamford, CT won first place for the 8th weekend in a row. He finished the weekend with a scorecard of 182 strokes. In round 1 he brought in a score of 97 and round 2 an 85. We applaud Liam for his win and hope to see another at his next tournament this coming weekend at the New Jersey Summer Junior Open.
Long time HJGT player, Mya Morgan from Elizabeth, PA was the first place finisher for the girls 14-18 division this past weekend. Mya has played with HJGT since 2017 and has played in over 15 tournaments. Not to mention Mya has finished first place in a majority of her HJGT career. She was able to secure her win this weekend with only 159 strokes. The runner up honors went to Ali Boyle from Murrysville, PA. Boyle put up scores of 88 and 89 totaling 177 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Payten Leet from Bradford, PA brought in a total of 208 strokes for the weekend.
To finish off a great weekend, first place HJGT points leader, Grace Rotatori from Stamford, CT was crowned the champion of the girls under 13 division. With a round 1 score of 81 and 83 for round 2, she finished the weekend with a total of 164 strokes. This was Grace’s 14th Top 10 finish of 2023.
