ST. AUGUSTINE – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Jacksonville Summer Junior Open at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club this past weekend from June 10-11. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had four divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
In the boys 16-18 division, Elliot Mehler from Flemming Island, FL was our first place finisher. Mehler did a great job on the course and finished the weekend with an exceptional scorecard. With seven birdies on the weekend, he put up scores of 74 and 71 totaling 145 strokes. The runner up honors went to Santiago Amador from Bucaramanga, Colombia. His scores of 75 in round 1 and 74 in round 2 gave him a total of 149 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Griffin Latimer from Canton, GA had scores of 75 for both days with a weekend total of 150.
Jonathan Brubaker from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL played in his first HJGT tournament this weekend and was our first place winner in the boys 14-15 division. Brubaker had three birdies on the weekend and scores of 74 and 75. He finished the weekend with a total of 149 strokes. With a total of 152, Jake Mason took home the runner up honors. Mason, from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL has been doing a great job so far this year and is within the Top 50 of HJGT point rankings. Finishing up top three honors was Brody Welch from St. Augustine, FL. Welch’s round 1 score of 90 and 89 for round 2 gave him a total of 179 strokes.
Grace Breffitt from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL took home first place for the girls 14-18 division this past weekend. Breffitt had six birdies on the weekend, putting up scores of 81 and 79. She was able to take the win with 160 strokes. Grace is an up-and-coming player on tour and is currently within the Top 50 of HJGT point rankings. The runner up honors went to Lila Weaver from Saint Johns, FL. Weaver put up scores of 87 and 85 totaling 172 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Alexa Fallis from Jacksonville, FL brought in a total of 184 strokes for the weekend.
To finish off a great weekend, Lanie Hoyle from Winter Park, FL played in her first HJGT tournament and was crowned the champion of the girls under 13 division. Her total for the weekend was 230 strokes.
