WARREN – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Great Lakes Junior Open at Avalon Lakes Golf Course from August 2-3. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had five divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
Taking the lead in the boys 16-18 division was Joshua Weiner from Macedonia, OH. Joshua brought in an exceptional scorecard for the tournament. With eight birdies, he had scores of 69 in round 1 and 76 in round 2. Weiner secured the first-place victory with a total of 145 strokes. This was his fourth Top 5 finish of the year. With a final score of 150, Copper Wierzchowski took home the runner up honors. For round 1, he had a score of 76 and a score of 74 for round 2. Finishing up the top three honors, Alexander Eckstein from Poland, OH with a scorecard of 154 strokes.
In the boys 14-15 division, Connor Laird from Fairview, PA finished the tournament in first place. In round 1 he brought in two birdies and a score of 77 and in round 2, one birdie and a score of 80. Laird ended the weekend with a final score of 157 to take home his first win of the year. The runner up honors went to Eli Bintrim from New Castle, PA. Bintrim brought in scores of 97 and 92 totaling 179 strokes. Bintrim is ranked in the Top 50 players of the HJGT point rankings.
In his first HJGT tournament, Drew Marling from Glen Dale, WV was crowned champion of the boys 11-13 division. Marling did a great job on the course. With one birdie, he brought in scores of 93 in round 1 and 82 in round 2. He ended the tournament with a final score of 175. We applaud his efforts and hope to see him on tour again soon.
Taylor Sargent from Milton, WV was the first-place finisher in the girls 14-18 division. Sargent brought in scores of 78 in round 1 and 77 in round 2 along with two birdies. She finished with a score of 155 to take her second win of the year. Kandace Kellon from Shaker Hts, OH took home the runner up honors and brought in her lowest score so far this year. With scores of 89 and 84, she had a total of 173 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Hannah Smith from Mansfield, OH with a scorecard of 176 strokes.
To finish off a great tournament, Betty Glyptis from Venetia, PA was the champion in the girls under 13 division. This was Glyptis’ first event with HJGT. Her scores of 97 in round 1 and 94 in round 2 gave her a total of 191 strokes.
