CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the College Prep Series at UVA at the Birdwood Golf Course from July 29-30. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had six divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13, Boys U10, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
The first-place finisher in the boys 16-18 division was Max Newton from Cary, NC. Newton is a newcomer to the HJGT and this past weekend was his first event, he brought in an outstanding scorecard. With one eagle and seven birdies, he brought in scores of 79 and 69. Newton ended the weekend with a total of 148 strokes to take the victory. The runner-up honors went to Charlie White from Richmond, VA. With a round 1 score of 75 and a score of 74 in round 2 totaling 149 strokes for the weekend. Tied for the top three honors was Brayden Rockwell from Winchester, VA and Brian Slaughter from Warrenton, VA. Both players were able to bring in an impressive score of 152 strokes.
In the boys 14-15 division, Ian McGee from Durham, NC placed first this past weekend. McGee brought in seven birdies on the weekend along with scores of 75 in round 1 and 73 in round 2. Ian ended the weekend with a final score of 148 strokes to take the champion title in his first tournament of the year. Jackson Wright from Midlothian, VA took home the runner-up honors for the weekend. His scores of 79 in round 1 and 75 in round 2 gave him a weekend total of 154 strokes. This follows an outstanding second-place finish at the Richmond Junior Open. With a final score of 159, Harrison Beaudoin from Midlothian, VA and AJ Mukherjee from Richmond, VA tied for the top three honors.
Leading the boys 11-13 division was Jack Kelley from Falls Church, VA. Kelley brought in an exceptional scorecard for the weekend. Bringing in one eagle and six birdies, he had scores of 78 and 68 for a combined total of 146 strokes. This was Kelley’s second event of the year and second win. The runner-up honors went to Justin Han from Fairfax Station, VA. In round 1 he scored an 83 and in round 2 scored a 91 totaling 174 strokes.
Bringing in his 14th win in a row in the boys under 10 division was Liam Rotatori from Stamford, CT. With two birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 89 for round 1 and 92 for round 2. Rotatori took the victory with a total of 181 strokes.
Sarah Wang from Mclean, VA finished the weekend in first place in the girls 14-18 division. Wang did a fantastic job on the course to secure her second win of the year. Her scores of 76 in round 1 and 74 in round 2 gave her a combined total of 150 strokes. Sarah is currently within the Top 30 players of HJGT point rankings. The runner-up honors went to Emily Wang from Mclean, VA. Wang has been playing with the HJGT since 2018 and has placed in the Top 10 in the 14 tournaments she’s participated in. This weekend she ended the tournament with a total of 162 strokes, her lowest score so far this year. Finishing up in the top three honors was Madisyn Falto from Spring Valley, NY with scores of 91 and 85 totaling 176 strokes.
To finish off a great weekend, Alexis Baek from Tysons Corner, VA was crowned champion of the girls under 13 division. This was Baek’s third event of 2023 and her first win. Her scores of 88 in round 1 and 85 in round 2 gave her a combined score of 173 strokes. Kathleen Kelly from Fairfax, VA took home the runner-up honors on the weekend. Kelley had a round 1 score of 122 and a round 2 score of 112 totaling 234 strokes for the weekend.
