STOW – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Cleveland Summer Junior Open at the Fox Den Golf Course from July 22-23. Boys and girls traveled from all over the globe to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had four divisions: Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Boys 11-13 and Girls 14-18.
Jacob Harnden from Grafton, Canada finished the tournament in first place in the boys 16-18 division. Harnden brought in an impressive scorecard for the weekend. With six birdies, he had scores of 75 in round 1 and 73 in round 2. Jacob took the champion title with a score of 148 strokes. This follows an outstanding second place finish at the Central Ohio Junior Open with a scorecard of 155 strokes. Tied for the runner up honors on the weekend was Matthew Contipelli from Solon, OH and Zachary Huscusson from Clinton, OH. Contipelli brought in one eagle, four birdies and scores of 73 and 76, while Huscusson had five birdies and sores of 75 and 74. Both players finished the weekend with a score of 149 strokes.
In the boys 14-15 division, Cameron Stafford from Medina, OH was the first place finisher. Stafford brought in two birdies and scores of 78 and 75 for a total of 153 strokes. This was his lowest score so far this year as well as his third win in a row. He is currently ranked in the Top 20 players of HJGT point rankings. Will Johnson from Berwyn, PA and Connor Laird from Fairview, PA tied for the runner up honors on the weekend. Both players had a total of five birdies and had a final score of 160 strokes.
Tommy Mercer from Gahanna, OH was our champion in the boys 11-13 division this past weekend. On round 1 he scored an 84 and a 78 in round 2 for a combined score of 162 strokes. Mercer is a newcomer to the HJGT and this was his second win of the year, he placed first at the Greyhawk Junior Open with a score of 178.
To finish off a great weekend, Eliza Mercer from Gahanna, OH took the first place win in the girls 14-18 division. Mercer brought in a fantastic scorecard for the weekend. With eight birdies on the weekend, she brought in scores of 74 in round 1 and 69 in round 2. Eliza finished the tournament with a total score of 143 strokes, her best score of the year. The runner up honors went to Molly McGreal from Independence, OH. This was McGreal’s first event of the year. With a round 1 score of 75 and a 87 in round 2, Molly finished the tournament with a score of 162. Finishing the top three honors in a tie was Kavya Chada from Hinckley, OH and Sarah Vojtko from Stow, OH both ending the weekend with a final score of 168.
