ALGONQUIN – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Chicago Mid Summer Junior Open at the Golf Club of Illinois from July 1-2. Boys and girls traveled from all over the country to participate in the 36-hole tournament. The event had four divisions; Boys 16-18, Boys 14-15, Girls 14-18 and Girls U13.
Longtime HJGT player, Cole Ropicky from Wales, WI was the first place finisher in the boys 16-18 division this past weekend. Ropicky has been playing with HJGT since 2019 and has five Top 10 finishes under his belt. This weekend he was able to secure the victory with six birdies and a total score of 142 strokes, his best tournament score of the year. The runner up honors went to Braydon Pulcanio from Orono, MN. With five birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 71 and 73. Pulcanio finished with a total of 144 strokes. Finishing up top three honors, Andrew Southwell from Glencoe, IL brought in a total of 152 strokes for the weekend.
In the boys 14-15 division, Grant Sherrick from Bettendorf, IA placed first. Sherrick brought in an exceptional scorecard this weekend. With nine birdies on the weekend, he brought in scores of 72 and 70 totaling 142 strokes. This was his third event of 2023 and his first win. Taking home the runner up honors was Kashton Wilson from Yorkville, IL. Wilson put up scores of 80 in round 1 and 76 in round 2 for a total of 156 strokes. The top three honors went to MJ Pulcanio from Orono, MN with a total of 159 strokes.
In the girls 14-18 division, longtime HJGT player McKenna Nelson from Beaver Dam, WI was our first place finisher. Nelson has been playing in HJGT tournaments since 2020, she has placed in the Top 10 in all the tournaments she’s played in. This weekend she secured the win with a total of 148 strokes. With two birdies on the weekend and a score of 161 strokes, Camille DeLost takes home the runner up honors. DeLost, from Kenosha, WI has participated in over 10 HJGT tournaments with 11 Top 10 finishes.
To finish off a great weekend, Aubrey Molasion from Waukesha, WI placed first in the girls under 13 division. This was Aubrey’s fourth win of the year. With a score of 88 in round 1 and 102 in round 2 totaling 190 strokes for the weekend.
