Joseph “Joey” Neal Graham commits to play golf at Division II Virginia Union University

HJGT alumni, Joseph “Joey” NealGraham, has recently committed to play golf at Division II Virginia UnionUniversity in Richmond, Virginia. Joey, a 2020 graduate of DeMatha Catholic College Prep High School in Hyattsville, MD, and 2020 Player of the Year, was a member of the school’s varsity golf team, lettering all four years.

In the last few years, he has achieved tremendous success in his golf game, finishing several low score tournament rounds of 74 or below. In the spring 2019 season, Joey helped his school team earn second place at theWashington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), shooting a 77 in the championship match. He was subsequently named to the all-WCAC second team as one of the top 12 players in the conference.

Graham was introduced to the game of golf by his dad at the young age of four. In his younger ages Joey also played football and basketball. It was not until 7th grade that Graham switched to solely playing golf. In 2016, Graham made his debut with the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. He joined the tour because of the college coach exposure and because the staff at Hurricane tournaments made his experience unforgettable. His favorite memory with the HJGT is from 2019 when he played in his first National Championship. Graham played at Orange CountyNational - Panther Lake and stated that it was the hardest course he has ever played in his life.

Joey has many ambitions in life, so we asked him about his short-term and long-term goals. Right now, his short-term goal is to finish college. He stated that one of the reasons he chose Virginia Union was because of the academics and how great the learning environment was for him. On the other hand, his long-term goal is to play in the PGA Tour. If that goal is not achieved, he stated his backup plan is to be a teaching pro and coach younger kids. He has a passion for golf and for helping young players get exposure to the sport.

Talking to Graham, he stated that his golf idol is Justin Thomas because of the way he carries himself on the golf course and he seems like an all-around good guy.Graham’s piece of advice for young golfers is “to always stay focused and to not let bad shots get in the way of your round. Once a bad shot happens it is in the past, leave it in the past.”

We are so proud of Joey and wish him nothing but the best with his collegiate golfing career!
