Why Our Age Divisions are Set Up for Fair Competition

When a junior golfer steps onto the course, they deserve a fair and challenging experience. At the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour, we believe competition is best when every player is on an even playing field. This is why our structure isn’t just about age; it’s a carefully designed system that ensures meaningful competition and promotes genuine skill development for every player, from our youngest competitors to our college-bound seniors.

Appropriate Yardage Adjustment

One of the most critical elements of fair play is tee box placement. As players age up, yardages increase. Our Boys 16-18 division plays 6,600-6,900 yards, preparing them for college golf, while our Girls 13 & Under division plays a manageable 5,000-5,100 yards. This tiered system ensures the course difficulty is appropriate to the skill and power level of the group, testing course management rather than raw distance.

Clear Boundary Rules

To protect the integrity of the divisions, we have clear guidelines. A player’s division is determined by their age during round two of a tournament. If a player turns 16 mid-season, they play the remainder of the season in the older 16-18 division. This policy ensures players are always competing in the most appropriate division for their current stage of development.

Support for Our Youngest Players

Inclusion means providing necessary support. We allow caddies only for our youngest players: the Girls 13 & Under and Boys 10-11 divisions. This crucial support system helps young competitors learn the rules, manage the course, and enjoy their introduction to tournament golf, setting a positive foundation for their competitive future.

Earning Points Across Divisions

Junior golfers often develop quickly. To reward skill acceleration, our rules allow players to earn points in two age divisions. This flexibility provides a pathway for top-performing players to compete and earn ranking points against older groups, offering both a challenge and a boost to their overall Player of the Year standing.

At HJGT, our age division structure is fundamental to the junior golf experience we provide. It is the engine that drives fair play, promotes skill development, and keeps competition rewarding.
