This Week On Tour: October 5-6

  Florida Fall Challenge: The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made another stop in Orlando on October 5th – 6th at Grand Pines Golf Club. The Florida Fall Challenge greeted the junior golfers with beautiful weather as they pursued the Florida Fall Challenge title. Winners in both Boys Divisions and Girls Divisions received one exemption toward the Florida Junior Tour, as well as an invitation to the HJGT’s 2013 Tour Championship. The rest of the top ten finishers were awarded points towards year-end honors. Lastly, winners in all four divisions will receive a $50 Kikkor Golf gift card. With back-to-back rounds of 68, Yidong Zhang from Orlando, Florida claimed the Florida Fall Challenge title for the boys 15-18 division. Zhang played exceptional golf over the weekend and finished the tournament without a bogey. With a four-stroke lead going into Sunday’s round, Zhang was the only player to shoot under par on Saturday. Zhang would have eight birdies and a field best 28 pars for the weekend. He would also dominate on the par three holes with a 2.8 scoring average and par fives with a 4.6 scoring average. James McHugh from Port St. Lucie, FL had a valiant effort in chasing down Zhang by making seven birdies on Sunday, but it would not be enough. With round scores of 73 and 68, McHugh would finish five strokes behind Zhang. McHugh did win the EFX Birdie Challenge with 10 birdies for the weekend. He would also contribute 21 pars and a field best performance on par four holes with a scoring average of 3.8. Rounding out the top three was Evan Thornton from Philadelphia, PA with rounds of 72 and 71 to finish with a final score of 143 at one under par. Thornton had 8 birdies and 21 pars. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback players of the week are Shun Yan Hak and Hayden Campbell who were able to improve their first round score by 11 strokes on the second day. The final day was the separator for the girls 15-18 division. Only one stroke separated the top three golfers after Saturday’s round, setting up for an exciting finish. Ailin Li from Windermere, Florida shot a bogey-free round of -9/63, which included 9 birdies and 9 pars, on Sunday for the victory. The round of 63 was the lowest round shot at an HJGT event. While birding three out of the four par five’s on Sunday, Li also had the field best performance on par four’s and par five holes with scoring averages of 4.0 and 4.9 respectively. She also would win the EFX Birdie Challenge with 10 birdies on the weekend and the Golf Pride Grips Comeback player of the week when she improved her first round score of 77 by 14 strokes. After a first round of 77, Mao Young from Orlando, Florida’s second round of 73 found her in second place. Young had five birdies, a field best 21 pars, and a 3.0 scoring average on par three holes. Angela Luna from Columbia finished three strokes behind Young. Luna posted four birdies and 21 pars also with a field best performance on par three holes with a scoring average of 2.6. In the boys 11-14 division Thomas Allkins had a four stoke lead going into Sunday’s round over 4 players that were tied for second place. However, Alberto Martinez from Weston, Florida shot a -7/65 on Sunday to come from behind and win the Florida Fall Challenge at Grande Pines. He shot a 31 on the back 9 to secure the victory. Martinez also won the EFX Birdie Challenge with 9 birdies for the weekend. He had a field best performance on par four holes with a 4.0 scoring average. Finishing second seven strokes behind Martinez was Amadeo Figus from Cathedral City, CA who shot rounds of 78 and 72.  Figus had five birdies and 22 pars for the weekend. He would also post a field best performance on par three holes with a scoring average of 2.9. Coming in third was Thomas Allkins from Lake Mary, Florida who shot rounds of 74 and 77. Allkins posted 6 birdies and a performance of 4.9 on par fives holes. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback player of the week was Matt Lashinger who improved his first rounds score by 20 strokes. It was all Erika Smith from Orlando, Florida for the girls 11-14 division. Smith shot a consistent 78 each day to win by seven strokes. She had a three-stroke lead over Mimi Chen from Longwood, Florida going into the final round. Smith dominated the field on par three, par four, and par five performance shooting the best scoring average for all three. Smith also contributed three birdies and 19 pars. Finishing in second was Chen, with rounds of 81 and 82. Chen led the field in pars with 20 for the weekend. Rounding out the top three was Cosette Anderson from Wesley Chapel, Florida who won the EFX Birdie Challenge with 3 birdies on the weekend. Her final score of 166 tallied 16 pars and also won the Golf Pride Grips Comeback player of the week when she improved her first round score by 8 strokes.  Weather

Players played the Pine Lakes course with beautiful sunny weather. The players this weekend represented nine different states and nine different countries. The top competitor from Girls 15-18 age division was awarded four AJGA performance stars while winners in all divisions received an automatic bid into the 2013 tour championship and the top 10 finishers receive points towards year-end honors including the inaugural Hurricane Cup. This event was be ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, South Carolina Junior Golf Association, and Tarheel Youth Golf Association. At the end of the first round, Toks Pedro of Bowie, Maryland led the boys 15-18 division shooting a one under par. Pedro’s Saturday performance was one of two below par efforts of the weekend. Pedro posted 27 pars and led the field in scoring average on par three holes with a 2.9 average. He would also have a 4.6 scoring average on par five holes matching his second place competitor Joey Lawrence. Lawrence of Augusta, Georgia finished the first day tied for second shooting an even 72, but could not keep up with Pedro on the final day when he posted a 73. Lawrence had one eagle and a 3.0 scoring average on par three holes. Also finishing tied for second was Andrew Alligood from St. Johns, Florida who posted scores of 75 and 70. His final round of 70 was the lowest round of the tournament. Alligood had 29 pars and won the EFX Birdie Challenge with a field best of 7 birdies on the weekend. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the week was Ryan Jacobs who improved his first round score by 8 strokes. Anita Uwadia of Lagos, Nigeria led the girls 15-18 division finishing Saturday one over par. Uwadia was able to maintain her lead as the other top competitors all finished Sunday shooting a score of 74. Both Uwadia and Madison Caldwell of Dawsonville, GA were the EFX Birdie Challenge winners with 6 birdies a piece. Uwadia led the field in par four holes with a scoring average of 4.2 and par fives with a 4.5 scoring average. Megan Carter from Blackshear, GA finished second with rounds of 76 and 74. Carter had three birdies of her own and lead the field with 25 pars for the weekend. Madison Caldwell finished third with her rounds of 79 and 74. She was making a charge up the leader board, as she was three under par through the first 7 holes, however she slowed down at the back nine. On top of her six birdies she also posted 26 pars. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week was Megha Saluja who improved her score by 14 strokes on the second day. On Saturday, in the boys 11-14 division, Ray Navis of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, who is coming off his sixth win this HJGT season, came out to a fast start when he birdied two of his first five holes. Despite cooling off later on Saturday, Navis entered the final round 2 shots back of Luka Karalulic, who eventually withdrew due to illness. Navis would post a even par 72 and win the tournament by 5 strokes. Navis had 24 pars and a field best performance on par four holes with a scoring average of 4.0. Navis and his second place finisher James Wohler would win the EFX Birdie Challenge with 5 birdies each. Wohler from Savannah, GA posted 20 pars on his way to a final score of 151. Finishing in a tie for third was Will Grattan of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and Chase Weathers from Saint Mary’s, GA who posted final scores of 154. Grattan had 25 pars on the weekend and Weathers would have a 4.9 scoring average on par five holes. The winner of the Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the week was Parker Klump when he improved his first round score by 10 strokes. On Saturday in the Girls 11-14 division, Dylaney Day of Toronto Canada and Sophie Guo of Bluffton, SC finished tied for the lead both finishing the day at 5 over par. Day and Guo continued to battle on Sunday as they both shot scores of 76. This led to a one-hole playoff on hole 18 to determine whom the champion would be. Dylaney Day came out of the playoff victorious as she won the hole with a bogey. Day would also be the EFX Birdie Challenge winner with 4 birdies and 20 pars. Sophie Guo had a field best 23 pars and the best performance on par three holes with 3.0 scoring average.  Finishing in third was Kaysie Harrelson from Tifton, GA with back-to-back rounds of 80. She had 19 pars and 3 birdies for the weekend. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback player of the week was Sarah May who improved her first round score by 7 strokes.  Weather
