The Summer Classic presented by Frogg Toggs took place at Eagle Creek in Orlando, FL on July 5th and 6th. The tournament was a two-day, 36-hole tournament. The weather was in the upper 80’s with one thunder delay late on Sunday.
Boys 15-18 Age Division
The Boys 15-18 division was a closely contested tournament from the start all the way till the end. Thomas Allkins of Lake Mary, Florida had an outstanding second round back nine come back to win the tournament on the 36th hole. Sam Hill of Orlando, FL finished in second place followed by Carson Stroyan of Oviedo, FL and Josh Bacon of Orlando, FL in a third place tie. Allkins shot a final round 71 after posting a 70 in the first round to finish with a 5-under par 141. Hill finished the tournament with a total of a 4-under par 142 with a 69 on Saturday and 73 on Sunday. Hill was the leader entering the Second Round and regained the lead on par 5 13th hole after making a birdie. However, Allkins tied the tournament on the 17th hole after making par. Allkins and Hill, playing side by side in the final group, both put their tee shots in the fairway on the challenging par 5 18th. Hill played his second shot first, and played a good lay up short of the lake in front of the green. Watching this unfold in front of him, Allkins decided to go for the green from 263 yards out, and played a fantastic 3 wood to about 15 feet from the pin. Hill then watched Allkin two putt to make birdie, and was unfortunately unable to make his birdie putt to send the tournament to a playoff. Both players played great golf leading a field that had a scoring average of 78.63 on Saturday and 78.8 on Sunday. Hill led the field with 11 birdies with Allkins second with 9 throughout the two-day tournament. Third place was a two-way tie with a total of level par 146. Stroyan was one under on Saturday with a 72 and one over Sunday with a 74. Bacon was 2 under Saturday with a 71 and 2 over Sunday with a 75. The great play by the 15-18 Boys carried on throughout the tournament into all divisions.
Boys 11-14 Age Division
Current top points leader of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) Boys 11-14 division, Cody Carroll of Jacksonville, FL proved this weekend why he is at the top of his division. Searching for his sixth HJGT win of the season Carroll fired an impressive 36-hole total of 138 (-8) captured his first place. After shooting a 71 (-2) the first day, Cody was looking to pull off a comeback being two strokes back after round one. In the second round, Carroll fired a 67 (-6) that was bogey free and included an eagle and four birdies. In second place was Ryder Sutcliffe of Jupiter, FL with a total of 140 (-6). Ryder was in the share of the lead after the first round with a 69 (-4). Sutcliffe had 13 total birdies over the two rounds at Eagle Creek. Coming in third place was Joe Pagdin of Orlando, FL with a total of 141 (-5). Pagdin was also in the share for the lead after round one. He only had three bogies throughout the weekend. At the finish, there were five out of the eleven players in the Boys 11-14 division under par after 36 holes.
Girls 15-18 Age Division
Sydney Merchant, originally from Colorado, finished with a total of 141 to win the 15-18 Girls Division at the Summer Classic at Eagle Creek. Merchant has recently won the Jacksonville Junior Challenge at Deerwood Golf Club and the Hurricane Mid-Season Girls Championship at LPGA International. She shot under par both days, with totals of 70 and 71 (141). She had the most birdies in the division with 10, and was the only player in her division to record an eagle. Finishing in second place was Gabrielle Correia with a weekend total of 144. Correia shot a 76 the first day and came back to shoot one-under par in the final round to secure her second place finish. Out of 36 holes, she had 26 pars, which tied for second in the division. Navika Kuchakulla and Isabella Wang tied for third with a weekend total of 148. Kuchakulla had the most pars in the division with 28. She also had the highest bogey-free streak with 14. Wang tied for second for most pars with 26. The older girls division was extremely competitive this weekend, with all four of our champions shooting under par one or both days.
Girls 11-14 Age Division
Erika Smith of Orlando, Florida outlasted her competitors in the Girls 11-14 division at Eagle Creek through the two days of competition. Smith had two great rounds shooting under par of 73 with a 70 in the first round and 69 in the second. She had an outstanding weekend of play, by only having one bogey in each round. Smith ended the weekend with having a total of 25 pars and came out with the first place trophy.. Mimi Chen of Bradenton, Florida and Caitlin Cotterill of Lake Mary, Florida tied for second place in a tight race for second. Chen had a total of seven birdies to aid her in her second place victory. Chen hit three under par for the weekend, which was only four more than Smith. Chen hit a 71 in the first round and a 72 in the second round. Cotterill hit a total of nine birdies to get her to the second place tie with Chen. Coterrill hit a below score of 70 in the first round and returned with a par of 73 in the second round. She was just behind Smith with 21 pars for the weekend.
