Orange Lake Jr. Open Highlight Video

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour visited Kissimmee, FL on April 26-27, 2014 for the Orange Lake Junior Open located at The Reserve Golf Course in the Orange Lake Resort. There couldn’t have been better weather for all the players to complete 36 holes of golf and determine who the champion this weekend would be. All division winners received an invitation to play at the 2014 Mid-Season Invitational and Tour Championship. Also, Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings and Florida Junior Tour Exemptions were awarded to all divisions. AJGA stars were awarded to three age divisions this weekend with Boys 15-18 and Girls 15-18 champions receiving four stars each while the Girls 11-14 champion received one star. Additionally, the top 10 finishers in all age divisions received points toward the year end honors of state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. In a top tier Boys 15-18 division, it came down to a putt on the third playoff hole between Michael Mattiace of Jacksonville, FL and Jerry Zhu of Lake Mary, FL. Both of these young men carded an impressive 142 for both days, but it was Jerry Zhu who inched out the win by making par on hole three of the playoff. Zhu sealed off the victory by improving his round one score of 73 to a 69 on the second day of competition. Zhu brought his best game on Sunday which was seen when he birdied his first and fourth holes of the competition. While Mattiace had an impressive 10 birdies through two rounds of golf, Zhu found a way to par 26 of his 36 holes while making five birdies. At the conclusion of the competition, Kyle Flexsenhar took third place after a first round of 68 with six birdies and a two day total of 144. Receiving this weekend’s most improved among the Boys 15-18 division was Hon Lam “Tom” Ng who improved his round one score by ten strokes. Coming from behind to steal the win away in the Girls 15-18 division with a two day total of 145 was Adeena Shears of Elizabeth, West Virginia. By firing a 70, one under par on Sunday, she edged out the victory by five strokes. After trailing on Saturday, Shears fought back with three of her five total birdies and 13 of her 25 total pars to make the only under par round for anyone in her division. Not only did Shears pull out the win by improving her round one score of 75, but she also improved the most out of both Girls’ divisions by lowering her score by 5 strokes from Saturday to Sunday. Finishing in second place was Ashley Kimbrough of Clearwater Beach, FL. She had rounds of 74 and 76 for a weekend total of 150. Ariadna Fonseca of Venezuela and Ankita Kedlaya of Howey in the Hills, FL tied for third place with a two day total of 154. In the Boys 11-14 division, the clear cut champion was shown to be Jayson Iten of Naples, FL. He had an even two day total of 142. Iten remained on top of the leaderboard despite great efforts from the field. Iten birdied the last two holes of regulation to bring himself back down to even par 71 for the second day in a row. This coupled with his four other birdies and his 24 pars for the weekend which helped him gain the win. Saransh Saxena of Dublin, CA ended with a two day total of 146 took home second place. Saxena had 24 pars and eight birdies on the weekend. Finishing in third place was Bryson Bianco of Tallahassee, FL with a total of 149. He carded six total birdies and 24 pars in the event. Battling back to show her true skills to take the win in the Girls 11-14 division was Nancy Lian of Lake Mary, FL. Lian bested the tough field of competitors. After being down by one stroke coming into Sunday, Lian posted five birdies and 10 pars in her final round on Sunday to finish with a 70 on the day and a weekend total of 143. Adding that to her four birdies and nine pars from the first round was enough to place her atop the leaderboard for her division. Lian birdied the first and last hole of regulation on Sunday to secure the win. Margaret Liu of Howey in the Hills, FL finished in second place with a solid 148 on the weekend. Liu had round scores of 72 and 76 with two birdies.Cindy Kou of Windermere, FL brought home third place with a total of 150 between both rounds. Kou’s had rounds of 76 and 74 on the weekend with two birdies as well.
