The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour was in Daytona Beach, Florida on June 22-24 for the Mid-Season Girls Invitational Presented by Sassy Caddy. The tournament was held at LPGA International, where the playing conditions were prime for this highly competitive tournament. Winners in the older girls division competed for four AJGA stars while the younger girls competed for one AJGA star. Both divisions received Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and the winner of the older girls received an exemption for a Florida Junior Tour event. The winners in both divisions received an invite to the 2014 Tour Championship and the 2014 Tour Shop Invitational. Additionally, the top ten finishers received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
Girls 15-18 Age Division
After the first round, the Girls 15-18 division was separated by just one shot. Quinn Atkinson of Mason, Ohio shot 77 in the opening round to take a one shot lead over Sydney Merchant of Morrison, CO and Gianna Tomeo of Bradenton, FL. Merchant put together great rounds in both round two and three to bring home the victory by five shots. She shot 74 in round two and 72 in round three to finish day two with a two day total of 152. Merchant entered the third round with a two stroke lead, but bogied the first three holes of the day. She responded well however, without another bogey the remainder of the day and she finished with three birdies and twelve pars on her final fifteen holes. Anne Yu of Lake Mary, FL shot a final round 74 to take home second place, and Lauren Waidner of Fleming Island, FL shot a third round 75 to finish in third place. Merchant’s seven birdies were the most in the field for the week and helped propel her to the five shot victory. Layne-Marie Carter of Lyons, GA won a set of golf pride grips after improving thirteen shots between round one and round two.
Girls 11-14 Age Division
The Girls 11-14 division was also packed with excitement throughout the weekend. Christyn Carr shot a one under par 71 in the final round to win by three shots over Caitlin Cotterill of Bradenton, FL. Mimi Chen of Longwood, FL finished in third place after shooting a final round 76 for a three day total of 227. Chen started the tournament in impressive fashion, when she carded a first round 71. She then followed up the 71 with a second round 80 and a 76 to finish third. Carr began the day with four pars before making her only bogey on the front nine at the fifth hole. She then had four consecutive pars until making another bogey at the eleventh, but followed that bogey up nicely with a birdie at the par three twelfth. She added two more birdies on sixteen and seventeen to finish the round at one under par. Carr put together three great rounds to claim the victory. Carr started with a 76 on day one, shot 73 on day two, and closed with a one under 71. Caitlin Cotterill led the field in birdies this week with six, and Kennedy Ann Noe of Knoxville, TN was the most improved when she improved her score by twelve strokes from day one to day two.

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) was founded in 2008 with the intention of providing junior golfers between the ages of 11-18 an opportunity to play exceptional courses in a competitive environment. Golfers who participate on the tour will compete in one of four age divisions: Boys 15-18, Boys 11-14, Girls 15-18, and Girls 11-14. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the nation, with stops in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Indiana and Connecticut.
