Major Championship at Owensboro
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Owensboro, Kentucky on June 21 – 22nd for the Major Championship at Owensboro Country Club. This two day 36 hole tournament featured scorching hot weather conditions with beautiful sunny skies that challenged both the mental and physical toughness of each of the 53 players in our field. These conditions tested and strengthened our golfers overall skills throughout this meticulous and beautifully designed course that required all competitors to use every club in their bag. Saturday’s round began with a double tee start at 1pm followed by Sunday’s single tee start 8am start. Winners in all divisions received an automatic bid into the 2014 Hurricane Tour Championship which takes place December 6-7. Top 20 finishers also received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, the Hurricane Cup, as well as their Junior Golf Scoreboard Ranking.
Boys 15-18 Age Division After two days of fierce competition Trey Poteet of Knoxville, Tennessee was crowned the Boys 15-18 Age Division Champion after he fired a tournament total of 141 (71, 70) over the two rounds of play. Poteet trailed the round one leader by one stroke (71) after the first day of competition and in round two he battled all over this well plotted out course to shoot a consistent one stroke lower in round two (70) to seal his victory by five strokes over the second place finisher. Poteet also tied for the most birdies with Christopher Heck of Greenwood Indiana both with a total of eight which earned them a brand new pair of NYX Sunglasses. Zach Smith of Mount Sterling, Kentucky placed second behind Poteet this weekend after carding a score of 146 (70, 76) for the tournament. Third place went to Louisville, Kentucky’s own Clay Amlung after he launched a two day total of 147 (72, 75). All competitors in this division battled through the heat to give all spectators in attendance a great two days of golf that ended in exciting fashion.
Girls 15-18 Age Division After only one shot separated our top two finishers, Lexington, Kentucky’s own Gypsie Hutchinson was our Girls 15-18 Age Division Champion this weekend with a score of 152 (77, 74) after two days of tough competition. Hutchinson meticulously plotted her way through the tough 36 holes shot by shot to become the Champion of her division after she entered the second round tied for the lead with a score of 78. Hutchinson battled through the second round to shoot four shots lower (74) than she did in round, Hutchinson also carded the most birdies in her division with a total of seven which earned her a brand new pair of NYX Sunglasses. Kristen Engle of Barbourville, Kentucky placed second behind Hutchinson this weekend by only one shot after she fired a tournament total of 153(78, 75). Engle entered the second day of competition tied for second place, and fought her way to remain second after she fired consistent rounds of 78 and 75. Meredith Moir of Louisville, Kentucky was the Girls 15-18 division third place finisher with a tournament total of 156 (80, 76). Each of our ladies showed tremendous mental and physical toughness to fight through the scorching Summer heat that Owensboro offered.
Boys 11-14 Age Division
The Boys 11 – 14 Age Division was full of excitement after the top three finishers were only separated by one shot each. Luke Raines of Mount Juliet, Tennessee was crowned champion after he carded a two day tournament total of 155 (77, 78). Raines fired the most birdies in his division and had 19 pars throughout his tournament play to help him earn first place this weekend. Coleman Jones of Franklin, Tennessee was the second place finisher this weekend after he carded three total birdies and 20 pars over two days which gave him a two day total of 156 (80, 76). Louisville, Kentucky’s Andrew Sullivan finished third this weekend after firing a tournament total of 157 (83, 74). Sullivan shot nine shots lower from his first to second round which brought him from fourth place to finish third.
Girls 11-14 Age Division
Lizzie Loy of Jamestown, Kentucky was our Girls 11 – 14 age Division champion after carding eight shots lower than the second place finisher with a two day tournament total of 168 (85,83). This was Loy’s third Hurricane Junior Golf Tour first place finish in only three appearances with the HJGT which is truly amazing. Loy came into the day with a two stroke lead and managed to run away from the competition. Louisville, Kentucky’s own Ryan Bender placed second after she shot two consistent rounds of 87 and 89 which gave her a weekend total of 176. Hannah Davis of Evansville, Indiana finished third this weekend with a total of 196 (97, 99).
