Golden Bear Jr. Challenge September 7-8

  The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made another stop on Hilton Head Island on September 7-8 at Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run. The weather was perfect the whole weekend with clear sunny skies. The Golden Bear Junior Challenge was open to all junior golfers from ages 11-18. Winners in both Boys Divisions and the winner in the Girls 15-18 Division received AJGA Performance Stars as well as top five finishers in the Boys 15-18 Division ONLY. Winners in all divisions also received South Carolina Junior Golf Association and Tarheel Youth Golf Association points as well as an invitation to the HJGT’s 2013 Tour Championship. Top ten finishers were awarded points towards year-end honors. Lastly, winners in all four divisions received a $50 Kikkor Golf gift card. It was back-to-back wins at Golden Bear for the 2012 defending champion Toks Pedro in the Boys 15-18 Division. The Rutgers University freshman golfer was the only player of the entire field to have a total score under par (143) after 36 holes shooting rounds of 73 and 70. Pedro, of Bowie, MD, was the EFX Birdies Challenge winner with 8 birdies for the tournament. Pedro also had a bogey free streak spanning 13 holes which was also a tournament best. Finishing three strokes behind Pedro was Trace Crowe of Easley, South Carolina. Crowe had 24 pars and had a birdie streak of three. Rounding out the third spot was Jonathan Phillips of Hardeeville, South Carolina shooting 73 and 74. Phillips had 7 birdies and had a 2.9 average on par 3 holes. Tied for first after the first day, Toks Pedro began his blistering comeback by birding four of the first seven holes on Sunday to secure the win. After shooting six over on the front nine, Jonathan was able to shoot four under on the back to secure a trophy. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Players of the Week were Gbenga Toriola and Christoph Theyer who improved their first round scores by 12 strokes on the second day. A playoff would be needed to determine a champion in the Girls 15-18 Division. Anita Uwadia of Lagos, Nigeria had a one stroke lead over Victoria Huskey of Greenville, South Carolina, after birding the 17th hole on Sunday. Victoria bogeyed the 18th, but Anita could not take advantage as she double bogeyed to force a playoff. Victoria would sink a 15-foot putt on the first playoff hole against Anita to win the championship. Victoria and Anita were separated by only one stroke going into Sunday’s round. Victoria and Anita would both with the EFX Birdies Challenge with five birdies a piece. Anita led the field with 22 pars on the round and had a field best 5.1 average on the par 5’s. Victoria followed closely behind with 21 pars, a performance average of 4.0 on par 4’s, and a bogey free streak of 12 holes. Third place was Mary Grubbs who shot a 85 on the first day and 79 on the second round. Grubbs had 3 birdies and 19 pars on the weekend. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week was Tere Casaus who improved her round one score by 13 strokes. In the Boys 11-14 Division it was James Wohler of Savannah, Georgia whose second round score of 73 secured the championship. Wohler shot a 76 and 73 for a total of 149 (+5). Wohler had 4 birdies, 23 pars, and a field best performance on par 3’s with a 2.8 average. Tying for second place and four strokes behind first was Jonathan Mitchell of Graniteville, South Carolina and Parker Gillam of Cary, North Carolina. Both shooting rounds of 77 and 76, Gillam had 4 birdies and Mitchell had 22 pars. All top three finishers were also the top three finishers after the first round. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Player of the Week was Connor Fischer who improved his score by 15 strokes. There was a four way tie for the EFX Birdies Challenge between Connor Creasy, Parker Gillam, Drew Weary, and James Wohler with 4 birdies a piece. It was all Delaney Day for the Girls 11-14 Division who ran away easily with the championship after leading by seven strokes after the first round. Day, from Toronto, Canada, shot an 80 and 82 to finish the round with a total of 162. Day had a field best of 23 pars and led the field in performance average o par 3, 4, and 5’s. Coming in six strokes behind Day is Preeya Shah from Fayetteville, North Carolina who shot a 87 and 81. Preeya had 19 pars herself and a 3.5 scoring average on the par 3’s. Rounding out the top is Sophie Gou from Bluffton, South Carolina with a final score of 171. Gou was also the EFX Birdies Challenge winner with a field best of 4 birdies. The Golf Pride Grips Comeback Players of the week were Preeya Shah and Jame Hubbard who improved their first round scores by six strokes.
