Shelby, North Carolina For the first time in tour history, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to the Deer Brook Golf Course in Shelby, North Carolina for the Carolina Fall Challenge. With junior golfers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and even Canada, competition was close even with an hour long down pour of rain early on in the second day of play. Junior golfers playing in the tournament were ranked by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, Tarheel Youth Golf Association, as well as the South Carolina Junior Golf Association. In the Boy's 15-18 Division, Alex Taylor of Gastoria, North Carolina came out on top. Over the two day competition, Taylor shot a 151 and was 7 over par. In his winning performance, Taylor sank the most birdies (6) and also won the Par 3 Performance Challenge with an average of 3.00. Coming in second in the Boy's 15-18 Division was Kern Carlton of Charlotte, North Carolina. In his second day of competition, Carlton shot at par, and by the end of the tournament ended up in second for the Par 4 Performance Challenge as well as total number of Pars. Rounding out the top 3 finishers for this division was Hunter McCombs of Morganton, North Carolina. McCombs stayed close throughout the tournament finishing 4 shots behind the leader (154) and also tied for first in the Par 3 Performance Challenge with an average of 3.00 Grace Massengill of Hickory, North Carolina won the Girl's 15-18 division. Massengill and her second day partner Calli Rice of Mars Hill, North Carolina battled it out till the end with Massengill ultimately coming out the victor. Massengill's two day total was 160 (+9) while Rice was only two strokes behind at 162. Massengill shot the most birdies (5) and won the Par 3 and 4 Performance challenges. Coming in third for the Girl's 15-18 Division was Kennedy Bodfield of St. Catherines, Ontario. The Boy's 11-14 Division champion was Vijay Mishra of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mishra's two day total was 156 (+12). Mishra dominated the statistical field winning the Par 3, 4, and 5 Performance Challenges as well as sinking the most birdies (4). Following behind Mishra in second place was John Gooden of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Gooden was the only player to eagle throughout the entire tournament, and ended up finishing with a 169 (+25). In third place for this division was Dan Castleberry of Greer, South Carolina, who shot a 177 (+33). Golfers who participate on tour will compete in one of four age divisions: Boys 15-18 Division, Boys 11-14 and Girls 15-18 and 11-14 Division. Based out of Jacksonville, FL, the HJGT administers events all across the southeast, with stops in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
