Mid Season Invitational
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Braselton, Georgia on Sunday June 22nd – Tuesday June 24th to host the Mid Season Boys Invitational at Chateau Elan Golf Club. Although there was a chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the tournament, the HJGT was able to complete all 54 holes without any delay. The Mid Season Boys Invitational was a Golfweek ranked event. Winners in each division also receive an automatic bid into the 2014 Tour Championship on December 6-7. Furthermore, players competed for Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings (JGS) and South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points (SCJGA). The top 10 finishers receive points towards year-end honors, which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup.
Boys 15-18 Age Division
The Boys 15-18 division was a wide-open competition until the very end. On Day 1, Jack Rhea’s putter was hot as he drained seven birdies en route to a -3 68. Right on Rhea’s tail were Jerry Zhu and Kip Denison, who both carded -2 69s. Zhu continued his strong play on Day 2 by shooting a -1 70, and led by one stroke over Spencer Haigwood heading into the final day. The highlight of Zhu’s round was an eagle on the par 5 15th. Joining Zhu and Haigwood in the leader pairing for the final day was Garrett Whitfield, who shot a tournament best -5 66 on the second day. Whitfield, who also led the field with fourteen total birdies, had seven birdies on Day 2. After new players jumped into contention on the first two days of the tournament, the final round was bound to come down to the wire. Haigwood started out hot and shot a -3 33 on the front nine as Zhu lost control of the lead. However, heading to the 15th tee, Whitfield was four strokes behind the leader and seemed to be out of contention. Whitfield saved his best for last as he birdied the 15th and 16th holes to cut into Haigwood’s lead. Whitfield would secure the lead after Haigwood ran into trouble on the difficult par 4 17th. A par to close out the round would be all Whitfield needed to capture the title. Haigwood finished in 2nd place, and Spencer Alexander finished in 3rd place after carding a -2 69 in the final round.
Boys 11-14 Age Division
Day 1 of the Boys 11-14 division was very competitive as numerous players carded scores in the mid-to-low 70’s. Cody Carroll led the field with a +1 72, but not far behind were Jackson Tyler (+2), Sam Lister (+3), and Cameron Frazier (+3). Carroll, who led his division with 39 pars for the tournament, had thirteen pars in the opening round. Carroll continued his consistent play on Day 2, as he sank fourteen pars without missing a putt from over five feet away. However, Lister looked to be catching fire when he birdied three consecutive holes to close out the front nine. Heading into the final round though, Carroll had a four stroke lead over Lister and a five stroke lead over Tyler. Both Lister and Tyler stumbled out of the gate on the front nine in the final round, and couldn’t recover to challenge Carroll down the stretch. Carroll finished the tournament at +5, and won by five strokes over 2nd place Tyler. Lister finished seven strokes behind Carroll to take home 3rd place.
