On August 26th and 27th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made a stop in Grand Prairie, TX. Despite the questionable weather conditions, players from all over Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas made the trip to Riverside Golf Club. The first round began with wet and windy weather conditions with a slight break in the clouds for sunshine to end the round. The second round was met with a downpour of rain and a lot of wind, and a slight lightning delay. Undeterred by the weather conditions, the kids continued to play full of enthusiasm and professionalism.
In the Boys 16-18 division, Walker Larue of Tyler, TX secured his first victory with rounds of 72 and 79 for a total of 151. His first round started out smooth with three straight pars. He finished the first nine holes by scoring three birdies and he finished the first round with 72. He began the second round with a downpour of rain on the front nine; however, Walker found his swing to get back on track.
Matthew Lewallen-Le earned a second place finish after he shot a 75 on Saturday and an 82 on Sunday for a total of 157. To round out the top 3 finishers was Anthony Elisco IV of Heath, TX. Elisco IV scored 77 and 81 for a total of 158.
In the Boys 14-15 division, Hunter Pratt of Plano, TX, secured the win in his first HJGT appearance. Pratt captured the victory with rounds of 79 and 85 for a total of 164. Pratt took an early lead in the first round with three birdies. Pratt was about to finish the 17th hole when the air horn was blown and issued a lightning delay. Unshaken by the delay, Pratt finished the hole with par. Connor Myrick of Fort Worth, TX finished second place with rounds of 94 and 88 for a total of 182.
In the Boys 11-13 division, Braxton Dean of Rockwall, TX, accomplished another victory with the HJGT with rounds of 84 and 80 for a total of 164. He scored an impressive 80 on the final round. After he finished on Saturday in challenging weather conditions, he was able to pick up his second victory of the year.
Kyle Nguyenphu of Allen, TX finished in 2nd place with scores of 82-94-176. He was up 2 strokes in the first round by Braxton. On the final round, he had some tough holes at the first nine holes in challenging weather condition.
Hayden Whittet of Grandbury, TX finished in 3rd place with a score of 92 in the first round of the tournament and an impressive 88 on the final round for a total of 180.
In the Girls 14-18 division, Janane Tan of Coppell, TX, finished strong for the first place trophy. Tan finished with rounds of 75 and 81 and finished with a strong 156. It was a very close first round on the front nine between Tan and Lilly Thomas with a 39 split. Tan began her lead with two birdies on the back nine of the first round and never looked back.
Lilly Thomas of Betonville, AR, took home the second place trophy with rounds of 84 and 82 for a total of 166. Thomas was a fierce competitor in the first round and closely challenged Tan, but couldn’t make up enough strokes to finish at the top. Lauren Nguyenphu of Allen, TX, secured the third place trophy with rounds of 89 and 84 with a total of 173.
In the Girls U-13 division winner was Alyssa Kurji of Dallas, TX. Kurji went into the final round down seven strokes. She fought back hard to win by just three strokes. Two early birdies on the back nine gave her the lead and she never looked back. The second place winner was Miyoko Tan of Coppell, TX. She finished with an 81 and 86 for a total of 167.
Boys 10 Under
In the Boys U-10 division, Rhett O’Rear of Plano, TX took home the championship trophy. He shot 81 in the first day, and an impressive 79 in the final round. Although the weather conditions were tough, Rhett was able to regain his focus after the delay and shoot an impressive 37 on the back nine of the final round.
