On Saturday, July 14 – Sunday, July 15, 2018, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Mohegan Sun Junior Open in Baltic, Connecticut. The two-day, thirty-six-hole tournament held on the Mohegan Sun Golf Club consisted of players from all six of our divisions, including the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division, Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division, Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division, Bryson DeChambeau Boys U10 Division, Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division, and the Justin Rose Girls U13 Division.
Tiger Woods Boys 16-18
Mark Gertsen, of New Canaan, Connecticut, had an impressive -6 finish in the second round of the tournament to help him capture the first-place title in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division with a two-day total of -3. He led his playing field with the most birdies (9) and the lowest scoring average (70.5). Evan Sitts of Oneonta, New York placed second after making 144 strokes for an E finish through the thirty-six holes. Third-place finisher was Jay Callahan of Wellesley whose 152 strokes resulted in a +8 finish.
Will Smith Boys 14-15
In the Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division, Thomas Ostberg of Darien took home the victory after making 154 strokes for a +10 finish. He led his playing field with the most birdies (7), the longest birdie or better streak (2), the lowest Par 3 average (77), and the lowest scoring average (77). Second-place finisher was James Pryor of Greenwich, Connecticut who finished the thirty-six holes at +21. Aidan Leblanc of Beverly made 167 strokes for a +23 finish through the two-day tournament.
Ernie Els 11-13
Rayan Nabilzadeh of Stamford, Connecticut walked away the champion in the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division after finishing the two rounds at +18. He made 2 birdies and led his playing field with the lowest scoring average (81). Second-place finisher, Colin Firda of Monroe, Connecticut, shot 171 strokes for a +27 finish. Nabilzadeh and Firda tied for the lowest Par 3 average in their playing field, each with an average of 3.4. JT Thomforde III of Ithaca, New York, placed third with 175 strokes through the thirty-six holes to finish at +31.
Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18
In the Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division, it was Caitlin Tully of Brewster, New York who captured the victory with her +16 finish. She led her playing field with the most birdies (5) and the lowest scoring average (80). Second-place finisher was Amelia Shen of Tenafly, New Jersey who made 167 strokes to finish at +23. Morgan Shepard of New York City finished just one stroke shy with 168 strokes for a +24 finish through the thirty-six holes.
Justin Rose Girls U13
Amanda Phillips of New York, New York captured the victory in the Justin Rose Girls U13 Division following her 157 strokes for a +13 finish. She led her playing field with the lowest scoring average of 78.5. Second-place finisher of Gabriella DeGasperis of Briarcliff Manor, New York made 160 strokes to finish the two-day tournament at +16. Maya Beasley of Croton on Hudson, New York finished third at +21 following her 165 strokes. All of the Top-3 finishers tied for the most birdies in their playing field as they each made 3.
Boys 10 Under
Colby Baran captured the first victory under our new division ambassador as he finished +32 in the Bryson DeChambeau Boys U10 Division. The Wading River, New York native made 176 strokes through the thirty-six holes and led his playing field with the most birdies (2), the lowest Par 3 average (3.6.), and the lowest scoring average (88). This is Colby’s 5th top 3 finish this year, and his third 1st place victory on tour this season.
