From Friday, June 7ththrough Sunday June 9th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Mid-Season Invitational Presented by Bag Boy. The tournament was made up of a 54-hole format with a field of six divisions that included the Tiger Woods Division Boys 16-18, Will Smith Division Boys 14-15, Ernie Els Division Boys 11-13, Bryson DeChambeau Division Boys 10 and Under, Justin Timberlake Division Girls 14-18, and the Justin Rose Division Girls 13 and Under.
Playing at the Sea Island Resort, Matthew Soucinek of Lake City, FL took the first-round lead after scoring an outstanding 71. Soucinek remained at the top of the leaderboard all weekend, with round of 70 and 73 and winning by a margin of 7 strokes. John Meadows of Knoxville, TN and finished in second place with rounds of 73 and 72 the first two days, tying with Felix Van Kleef of Hilton Head, SC for runner up honors. Meadows and Van Kleef finished their week with a 221 total, with rounds under 76 shots all three days.
The Will Smith division played out of Sea Island Resort as well, with Rowan Sullivan of Charleston, SC claiming victory honors. Sullivan was able to seal his victory with rounds of 72 and 74 over the weekend, making 3 birdies the last day to finish at a three-day total of 222 strokes. Logan McCormick of Mount Sterling, KY claimed runner-up honors with a three day total of 229, just 7 shots shy of the winner for the division. Rounding up the top three were Doug Gugel of Winter Springs, FL and Michael Thomas of Lutz, FL with a three-day total of 232, to tie for third-place honors.
With rounds at Brunswick Golf Club, Andrew Reyes of Kathleen, GA was able to seal his victory after a birdie on the first play-off hole against Ryan Banas of Winnetka, IL. Both players shot impressive three-day totals of 212, 4 under par for the weekend. Banas shot a 70 the last day to force a playoff where Reyes came victorious. Rounding up our top-three was Trace Carter of Blackshear, GA with an impressive final round of 71 to finish at 220 strokes for the week and claim solo third-place honors.
Both girls divisions played at Brunswick Golf Club as well, with Carla Alvarez Perez of Panama, Central America claiming first-place honors. Alvarez Perez was able to seal her victory with a three-day total of 226 and a first-round lead of 73. Alvarez shot a 76 on Sunday to win by a margin of two-strokes over Rachel Burrell of Suwanee, GA. Burrell shot a 73 on Sunday to close her week at a total of 228 shots and claim solo runner-up honors. Rounding up the top three with a three-way tie were Laura Lu of China, Jessica Shao of North Myrtle Beach, SC and ally Buchanan of Athens, GA. All with three-day totals of 230 shots, our Justin Timberlake division was completed.
Mary Miller of Savannah, GA shot an impressive three-day total of 215 1-under to seal a five-shot victory over her closest competitor. Miller closed out her week with final rounds of 72 over the weekend and claim victory. Following her was Trinity Beth of Calvert City, KY with phenomenal weekend rounds of 69 and 71 to finish with solo runner-up honors. And round up our top-three was Amelia Cobb of Jacksonville, FL with rounds of 74 and 73 over the weekend to finish with a three-day total of 223 and solo third-place honors.
Boys 10 Under
At the Brunswick Golf Club as well, Carson Higginbotham of Clarksburg, WV finished with a three-day total of 212 shots and 4 under for the week. Higginbotham claimed first-place honors by shooting a 71 on Sunday with birdies on holes 3, 12, 14, and 15. Following his lead was Evan Pena of Bayamon, Puerto Rico with a final round of 74 to claim solo runner-up honors. Pena had birdies on holes 1, 12, and 13 on Sunday to complete his week. Rounding up our top-three was Cade Fehr of Wildwood, MO with a three-day total of 248 to claim third-place solo honors with a birdie on hole 3 the last day.
