On Saturday, June 30 – Sunday, July 1, 2018, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Maryland Summer Junior Open in Laytonsville, Maryland. The two-day, thirty-six-hole tournament that took place on the Laytonsville Golf Club consisted of players from all six of our divisions, including the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division, Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division, Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division, Boys U10 Division, Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division, and the Justin Rose Girls U10 Division.
Nikita Gubenko of Great Falls, Virginia took home the victory in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division as he finished +3 through the thirty-six holes. He made 4 birdies and had the lowest scoring average in his division of 72.5. Second-place finisher, Jackson Bruns of Charlottesville, Virginia shot 147 strokes to finish at +5 on the weekend. Daniel Suter of Gaithersburg, Maryland had a total of 149 strokes to finish +7.
There was a tie for first-place in the Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division as both Corey Minkoff (Gaithersburg, MD) and Mikey Morga (Purcellville, VA) both shot 150 strokes for a +8 finish. Morga had the lowest Par 3 average (2.8), while both Morga and Minkoff both made 4 birdies. Third-place finisher was Trey Elder of Oakton, Virginia who finished at +10 through the thirty-six holes.
In the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division, it was Peter Nusbaum of Pittsboro, North Carolina who took home the victory after finishing +17 at the end of the two-days. He led his playing field with the lowest scoring average (79.5), the lowest Par 3 average (3.4), the most birdies (5), and the longest birdie or better streak (2). Second-place finisher, Colin Vineberg of Sparks, shot 163 strokes to finish +21. Nicholas Zhu of Vienna, Virginia placed third with a two-day total of 200 strokes for a +58 finish.
Alyssa Cong of Germantown, Maryland captured the victory in the Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division after finishing +6 through the thirty-six holes. She made two birdies and led the playing field with the lowest scoring average (74). Second-place finisher was Patricia Sutanto of Singapore who shot 77 strokes for a +8 finish. Bridget Forgatch of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida finished third after her 153 strokes at the end of the two-days for a +11 finish.
In the Justin Rose Girls U13 Division, it was Shelby Herbert of Charlotte Hall, Maryland who walked away the champion as she finished the two-day tournament at +30. She made 2 birdies and led her playing field with the lowest scoring average of 86. Second-place finisher was Hillary Yoon of Mclean, Virginia who shot 178 strokes for a +36 finish through the thirty-six holes.
Boys 10 Under
In the Boys U10 Division, it was Bethesda, Maryland’s Jack Borg who took home the victory after finishing +31 through the thirty-six holes. He led his playing field with the lowest scoring average (86.5), the lowest Par 3 average (3.6), and the most birdies (1). This was Jack’s first tournament on tour with us this year and he started on a high note.
