On Saturday, July 7 – Sunday, July 8, 2018, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the Major Championship at Birdsfoot in Freeport, Pennsylvania. The two-day, thirty-six-hole tournament that took place on the Birdsfoot Golf Club consisted of players from five of our divisions, including the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division, Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division, Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division, Boys U10 Division, and the Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division.
JF Aber of Sewickley, Pennsylvania finished E on the weekend to become the champion in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 Division. He made 6 birdies and led his playing field with the lowest scoring average of 72. Karsen Rush (Chambersburg, PA) and Will Nocito (Sewickley, PA) tied for second as they both made 146 strokes through the thirty-six holes to finish at +2.
In the Will Smith Boys 14-15 Division it was Jack Berl of Victor, New York who was victorious as he completed the tournament at +9. He led his playing field with the lowest scoring average (76.5) and the lowest Par 3 average (3.4). Second-place finisher was Scott Jordan of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who shot 164 strokes for a +20 finish. Zachary Locke of Horsheads, New York finished at +21 through the thirty-six holes.
Michael Ostrower of Saltsburg captured the title in the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 Division this weekend after finishing +14. He led his playing field with the lowest scoring average (79), the lowest Par 3 aevrage (3.1), and the longest birdie or better streak (3). David Fuhrer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania finished second with 160 strokes for a +16 finish on the weekend. Third-place finisher was Kelly Zhu of Beijing who finished the thirty-six holes at +18.
Tatum McKelvey of Sewickley, Pennsylvania was victorious in the Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18 Division after finishing the thirty-six holes at +12. She led her playing field with the lowest scoring average at 78. Second-place finisher was Pan Yiting of Shanghai who shot 162 strokes for a +18 finish. McKelvey and Yiting tied for the most birdies in their playing field as they each made 2. Lindsey Powanda of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania shot 163 strokes to finish at +19 which resulted in her third-place finish.
Boys 10 Under
In the Boys U10 Division, it was Carson Higginbotham of Clarksburg, West Virginia came out on top after beating second-place finisher Jackson Harris in a play-off after they both shot 154 strokes for a +10 finish. Harris, of Powell, Ohio, and Higginbotham tied for the lowest scoring average in their field at 77. Third-place finisher was Dylan Kotes of Hopewell Junction, New York who made 159 strokes for a +15 finish.
