On Saturday, November 18th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Hilton Head, South Carolina to hold the Hilton Head Junior Challenge at George Fazio Golf Course which hosted the tournament as well. Saturday and Sunday saw equally beautiful, breezy conditions perfect for low scores and plenty of smiles. There was a lot at stake during the tournament as the top 10 finishers received points towards year end honors which include state teams, All HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup. There were also Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings (JGS), South Carolina Junior Golf Association Heritage Points (SCJGA) and Tarheel Youth Golf Association Points (TYGA) on the line as well for qualified players. Overall, the George Fazio Golf Course allowed for a weekend full of great competition from all divisions with elevated levels of play from the nation’s most talented junior golfers.
Ty Sullivan is the boys 16-18 champion. The Toronto native took home the division championship by edging out his competition in two highly contested rounds. Our division champion posted a 65 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday for a two-day total of 143 in route to a victory. Mikus Ming from Smiths, Bermuda finished in second with a two-day total of 148 (75-73). Third place was won by Alan Smith (75-74) of Winchendon, MA with a total of 149. The field, spectators, and staff were excited to see such a fantastic finish by this division full of talented competitors.
Mason Kleinlein is the champion of the boys 14-15 division. The Statesboro, GA native posted rounds of 77 and 79 for a two-day total of 156 by playing sharp and consistent. Mudit Rana of Noida took home the second-place trophy after finishing with a two-day total of 158 (76-82). Third place was taken home by Akira Shirai of Hiroshimashi for a two-day total of 160 (78-82). The play of this division was enjoyed by the field, spectators and staff who were excited to see such great play and effort from these promising young golfers.
Kathrina Hesse of Bremen is the girls 14-18 champion. Hesse paired an 75 Saturday with an 75 Sunday for a two- day total of 150 to edge out the competition and win the girls 14-18 division. Second place was a two-way tie between Vivian Yen of Taipei (75-82) and Maria Fernanda Sosa (81-76) of Monterrey, Mexico for a two-day total of 157. Third place was taken by Yeon Joo Kim of Seoul, South Korea with a two-day score of 166 (86-80). The ladies all enjoyed their experience, even with some intense competition down the stretch.
Kathryn Schaefer is the girls under 13 champion. Schaefer of Kalamazoo, MI, emerged victorious after pairing an 89 Saturday with a 86 Sunday. This netted Schaffer a score of 175 to take a championship trophy back to Kalamazoo. Finishing second was Ellie Johnson of Des Peres, MO who posted a two-day total of 202 (111-91). This division’s great play was inspiring and promising as the field, staff and spectators enjoyed watching her compete.
Boys 10 Under
Luke Parsons of Salley, SC took home the 1st place trophy for the boys under 10 division. Parsons posted a two-day score of 162 (79-83). Hunter Parsons of Salley, SC took home second place trophy after posting a two-day score of 173 (89-84) for the Hilton Head Junior Challenge at George Fazio Golf Course. Everyone was excited to see such lively and inspiring play from golf’s future leaders.
