On Saturday May 19 – Sunday May 20, 2018 The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Hartford Junior Open in Simsbury, CT. The tournament was made up of a 36-hole, two-day format and the field was made from five divisions that included the Tiger Woods Division Boys 16-18, Will Smith Division Boys 14-15, Ernie Els Division Boys 11-13, Justin Timberlake Division Girls 14-18 and the Justin Rose Girls U13 Division.
Max Orwicz of New Canaan, CT captured the title in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 division with a two day total of 153. He led the field in lowest scoring average (76.5) and led the contest in birdies (6). After finishing second on day one, Orwicz was able to take the lead in the second round after shooting 76 (+4), finishing 3 strokes below second place finishers Nathan Dos Santos and Matthew Chorches, who tied at 156.
In the Will Smith Boys 14-15 division, Michael Hanratty of Avon, CT took home the victory after shooting 2 birdies and posting the lowest scoring average of the contest (75.5). Hanratty averaged +3 on the front nine, which is at least three strokes less than all of his competitors. Second place finisher and Weatogue, CT native Bennett Ostern narrowly missed the title by 1 stroke. Ostern posted 6 birdies on the weekend, three of which were consecutive. Securing third place honors was Jack Bosworth who shot a two day total of 152.
Thomas Finn of Locust Valley, NY won the weekend for the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 division; this is his first championship title win for the 2018 season. He shot a combined 147 (+3) after posting an impressive par on day two. Finn shot 5 birdies and finished with a 73.5 scoring average. Sam O’Hara from Rye, NY finished second, coming in at 155. John Hiller shot a final round 72 which was good enough to secure his third place finish. Hiller had a two day total of 159.
The Justin Timberlake Division came down to the wire with the top 2 going to a playoff round for the title and the top 3 finishing within two shots of each other. After the playoff, Malini Rudra of Syosset, NY finished first after shooting an impressive 76 on her final round (+4), improving 5 shots over her first round. Rudra posted 4 birdies on the weekend and had a total score of 157. Sydney Nethercott of Greenwich, CT also totalled 157, but fell just short in the playoff round. Elizabeth Garfield’s total of 159 allowed her to clinch a close third. Garfield led the par 3 leaderboard with a 3.0 average.
In the Justin Rose Girls U13 division, Kennedy Swedick from Altamont, NY took the title. Swedick shot a total 160 on the weekend after shooting a consistent 80 strokes each round. 3 birdies and a 3.4 par 3 average gave Swedick a 3 stroke win over Sydney Yermish of Wynnewood, PA who shot a total 163 after a +6 round on Sunday. Coming in third place was Amanda Phillips who shot a two day total of 169.
