On Friday, August 25th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Bloomfield, CT to hold the Hartford Junior Classic hosted by Wintonbury Hills Golf Course. The young and talented golfers were lucky to have beautiful sunny days on Saturday and Sunday. Top finishers from each division will receive points towards year-end honors and an opportunity to make a splash in Florida at the end of the year for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s National Championships. Wintonbury Hills was a spectacular course that the players, spectators, and staff enjoyed throughout the weekend.
Jack Phelan is the Boys 16-18 champion. The Massachusetts native took home the division by holding off the competition with consistently focused play. Our division champion posted a 69 on Saturday and held the lead by posting a 72 on Sunday. This gave him a two-day total of 141 in route to a victory including 6 birdies in two days. Brendan Smith (71-71) of Sayville, NY finished in 2nd place with a two-day total of 142. Ray Gresalfi (71-74) of Lake Success, NN finished 3rd with a two-day total of 145. The boys in this division played with stellar sportsmanship while impressing spectators and staff.
Calvin Smith is the champion of the Boys 14-15 division. This was Smith’s second Hurricane win this summer! The victor, from Darien, CT posted rounds of 75 and 70 for a two-day total of 145. Jud Langille of Ossining, NY took home the second place trophy after finishing with a two-day total of 147 (75-72). Third place was taken home by Jackson Roman of Kensington, CT who posted a two-day score of 149 (76-73). Langille and Smith were tied going into the 11th, with Smith making birdie on the 18th hole to seal the victory.
Sachin Bhasin is the Boys 11-13 champion. A 78 and 74 were enough to secure the victory for the Plainview, NY native, finishing with a two-day total of 152. Jack Turner from Saunderstown, RI finished in second shooting 77 and 82 and a total of 159. Finishing in third was Elias Kennon from Old Greenwich shooting a score of 79 and 81 160. Bhasin continuously showed good sportsmanship to his fellow competitors and was thrilled to come out with the win
Danae Rugola of Uniontown, PA is the Girls 14-18 champion. Rugola traveled 10 hours to play in this tournament to pair a 72 Saturday with a 73 Sunday for a two-day total of 145. She was very happy to have made the trip and play spectacularly. Finishing in 2nd from Tenafly, NJ was Emma Shen who posted rounds of 73 and 76 for a two-day total of 149. 3rd place was captured by Anne Walsh of Jamaica Plain, MA. She posted a 75 and a 77 for a two-day total of 152. All in all the girls enjoyed the competition at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course.
Gianna Papa is the Girls under 13 champion. Papa, from Foster, RI played very well, posting a 73 (including two birdies) on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday for a two-day total of 154. In 2nd place came Gianna’s younger sister, “Vinny” Papa, also from Foster, RI. The eight year old posted a consistent 83 and 83 for a two-day total of 166. Coming in 3rd place was Amelie Phung, from Forest Hills, NY. The young girls had fun throughout the weekend while also playing some great golf.
