On Saturday May 19 – Sunday May 20, 2018 The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the College Prep Series at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. The tournament was made up of a 36-hole, two-day format and the field was made from five divisions that included the Tiger Woods Division Boys 16-18, Will Smith Division Boys 14-15, Ernie Els Division Boys 11-13, Justin Timberlake Division Girls 14-18 and the Boys U10 Division.
Adam Hooker of Lebanon, VA captured the title in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 division with a two day total of 145 (+1). He shot a consistent game and tied for fourth in most birdies (4). He maintained his day one lead in the second round by shooting a 73 (+1), finishing four strokes below second place finisher Ben Carroll from Blacksburg, VA. Carroll led the par 3 leaderboard (3.1) and posted a 74.5 scoring average. Dominic Sampedro from Leesburg, VA came in third with a total score of 152 after breaking even the final day.
In the Will Smith Boys 14-15 division, Matthew Monastero from Leesburg, VA took home the title after being the only player to finish under par in a single round. Monastero shot a 69 (-3) in round two to post a total 145 finish on the weekend. He led in most birdies (8), scoring average (72.5), and finished third on the par 3 leaderboard with a 3.2 average. Second place finisher Trevor Price of Radford, VA shot 4 birdies and finished at 157 overall. He finished second in most birdies and first on the par 3 leaderboard with a 3.1 average. Matthew Aman took home 3rd place honors after shooting a two day total of 161.
Peter Nusbaum of Pittsboro, NC won the weekend for the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 division with a combined total of 150. An impressive 71 stroke finish on the final round and 5 birdies overall would seal the deal for Nusbaum. This is his first 1st place finish on the 2018 season. Nate Gravender secured his second place finish with a two day total of 180.
Lauren Artis of Upper Marlboro, MD was the champion of the Justin Timberlake Division. After 36 holes, Artis shot a 161 overall. She led in birdies and scoring average (80.5). Coming in second was Madeline Simcox at 169 and Ivy Foran at a close third (170).
Boys 10 Under
Benjamin Baker earned the title of the Boys U10 division. Baker broke even on the final round, giving him a total score of 154 on the weekend. He shot 4 birdies, two of which were consecutive, and finished with a 77.0 scoring average. Baker has finished first in all four tournaments he has played so far this year.
