On Thursday, August 17th, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to East Lancing, Michigan to hold the College Prep Series at Michigan State hosted by Forest Akers Golf Course. This field of junior golfers were determined to get another tournament in before school started. Weather cooperated and provided beautiful conditions for 36 holes. Top finishers from each division will receive points towards year-end honors and an opportunity to make a splash in Florida in December for the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s National Championships. The HJGT would like to thank the wonderful staff members and administrators of Forrest Akers Golf Course for their hospitality and for providing such wonderful playing conditions for our field. All in all, a fantastic weekend was had for low scores and competitive play for each and every golfer.
TJ Hirschfield is the boys 16-18 champion. The Oxford, MI native took home the division by keeping his composure to edge out the rest of his. Our division champion posted a 76 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday for a two-day total of 147 in route to a victory. Josh DiCarlo of Amherstburg, Ontario finished in second with a two-day total of 151 (74-77). Phillip Wong of West Bloomfield, MI brought home third place honors with a two-day score of 152 (75 – 77). The field, spectators, and staff were excited to see such a fantastic finish by this division full of talented competitors.
Joey Gemerchak is the boys 11-13 champion. A 99 on Saturday and a 94 on Sunday was enough to secure the victory for the Toledo, OH native, finishing with a two-day total of 193. Joey showed nothing but class, sportsmanship and gentlemanlike behavior as they traversed around a challenging golf course.
Cammi Lucia of Grand Blanc, MI is the girls 14-18 champion. Lucia paired an 88 on Saturday with an 81 on Sunday for a two-day total of 169 to edge out the competition and take the girls 14-18 division. Erin Sexsmith of Portage, MI posted a two-day total of 182 (90-92) to take home second place honors. Reika Fujiwara of Novi, MI turned in a two-day total of 187 (95-92) to take home third. The ladies each enjoyed their experience, with some intense competition down the stretch.
Brooke Oberparleiter is the girls under 13 champion. Oberparleiter of Laurel Springs, NJ emerged victorious after shooting a score of 77 on Wednesday and a score of 79 on Thursday. This netted Oberparleiter a score of 156 and a champion trophy. Finishing second was Kathryn Schaefer of Kalamazoo, MI posting a two-day total of 161 (83 – 78). Third place was taken home by Adriana Isabel Balaguer of Dorado, PR who posted a two-day total of 181 (90 – 91).
