On Saturday, June 23 – Sunday June 24, 2018 The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour held the Canton Junior Open at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Canton, OH. The tournament was made up of a 36-hole, two-day format and the field was made from five divisions that included the Tiger Woods Division Boys 16-18, Will Smith Division Boys 14-15, Ernie Els Division Boys 11-13, Justin Timberlake Division Girls 14-18, and the Justin Rose Girls U13 Division.
Paul Mastros of Steubenville, OH captured the title in the Tiger Woods Boys 16-18 division with a two day total of 145. He was able to capture the title in the second round after a 72 stroke finish (+2). He finished only 2 strokes below second place finishers Colton Levey and Josh Steyer who totalled 147 after 2 days. Steyer had 5 birdies on the weekend.
In the Will Smith Boys 14-15 division, Benjamin Ramold of Canton, OH shot 5 birdies and a 153 overall to win the weekend. Tega Cay, SC native BWitt Wittmer took home the silver with a 156 stroke finish despite a +6 round on day 2. Third place finisher Ian Shemo of Westlake, OH shot a total of 159 (+19).
Braden Hilditch of Erie, PA won the weekend for the Ernie Els Boys 11-13 division. He shot a combined 154 and posted 3 birdies. Breckin Taylor from Fairview, PA narrowly finished second with a total score of 156. Taylor led in birdies (4). In third was Carson Foltz of Vann Buren, who totaled 167 after an 82-stroke round on day 2 (+10).
After 36 holes, Kiaira Porter of Monaca, PA shot a total of 148 (+4) after shooting an impressive 70 (-2) on day one. Porter shot 5 birdies, two of which were consecutive. Second place finisher Natalie Welsh of Valencia was 5 strokes behind at 153. Coming in a close third was Emily Kase of North Tonawanda, NY, who shot 76 and 79 for a grand total 155. Kase also had 5 birdies on the weekend.
In the Justin Rose Girls U13 division, Angelina Gong from Dublin took the title. Gong shot 170 total (+26) after 5 birdies on the weekend. This is Gong’s first 1st place finish on the year.
