On November 18th and 19th 2017, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour made a stop in Suwannee, GA. Despite the tough weather conditions, golfers remained poised at Bear’s Best Golf Club. With a field of almost 100, players traveled from across the country as well as the Bahamas to compete in this event.
Tiger Woods Boys 16-18
Takafumi Shimoji of Suwanee, GA was awarded the first place trophy. Shimoji took the lead after he shot an astonishing first round with 5 birdies. After shooting a Round 1 score of 73; with even harder conditions for Round 2, he still managed to shoot an impressive 75 totaling 148. Tommy Chun, another native of Suwanee, swept in to take the second place trophy. Tommy Chun finished with rounds of 76-81 for a total of 157. Third place ended in a two-way tie with Owen Doherty of Alpharetta, GA and Davis Markham of Roswell, GA. (Doherty: 77-83-160 / Markham: 79-81-160)
Will Smith Boys 14-15
In the Boys 14-15 division, Will McGriff of Vedra Beach, FL took home the champion title. Even though McGriff was down one stroke after Round 1, he remained composed to find his stroke in the second round. His unfazed self-confidence allowed him to lessen is strokes by 4 for a total of 154. (79-75) The second place finisher was Deven Patel of Johns Creek, GA. Leading into Round 2 was a three-way tie for first. With the pressure on, Patel managed to finish the second round strong to take home the second place trophy. (78-83-161) Rounding out the top three finishers was Liam Shinn of Norcross, GA. Norcross finished with rounds of 78-75 for a total of 163.
Ernie Els 11-13
The first place finisher in the Boys 11-13 division was Jimmy Coleman of Cumming, GA. Coleman was given a run for his money for two very close rounds, but clinched the champion title with rounds of 80-77 for a total of 157. Aidan Cohl of Lawrenceville, GA remained within one stroke of Coleman after Round 1. Cohl began his second round determined and shot within one stroke of Coleman once again. After putting up a very competitive fight, Cohl took home the second place hardware with rounds of 81-78 totaling 159. Rounding out the top three finishers was Ethan Smith of Marietta, GA with rounds of 83-80 for a total of 163.
Justin Timberlake Girls 14-18
The Girls 14-18 division ended with a one-hole playoff between Charli York of Johns Creek, GA and Sara Im of Duluth, GA. York took an early lead after the first round only +2, but after a tough second round, Im lessened her strokes and came within reach of York. York won the playoff round to take home the first place hardware while Im was graciously awarded her second place trophy. (York: 75-78-153 / Im: 78-75-153). The third place trophy winner was Michelle Cao of Duluth, GA with rounds of 79-77 for a total of 156.
Justin Rose Girls U13
Ella York was the champion of the U13 division after finishing out the weekend with a total of 175 (82-93); only three strokes ahead of the second placeholder, Haven Ward. Ward, who finished just four strokes shy of her Round 1 score (91-87), fought to the very end to claim her spot in the top three. As for the third place winner, the young and talented Zoe Duval finished 9 holes par with a total of 190.
