LAKE MARY, Florida (March 11, 2012) – The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour hosted the first Major Championship of the 2012 season at Timacuan Golf and Country Club. The tournament consisted of over 90 players in competition from around the globe. The states and countries that were represented this weekend are as follows:  Florida, India, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Singapore, China, Maryland, Massachusetts, Austria, New York, France, Canada, Chile, Nigeria, Switzerland, and Mexico. Weather on both Saturday and Sunday proved to be a challenge for all of the players. Saturday saw cloudy skies with strong winds and rain. Sunday also turned out to be challenging with 25 mph wind gusts and scattered showers. This weekend brought out the true competition within the field of competitors, due to the exceptional weather challenges. In the Boys 15-18 Division of the Major Championship this weekend, Carl Yuan of Lake Mary, Florida, won with an astounding score. Yuan posted a two day total score of -6 (69+69=138). Yuan overcame the challenging weather conditions this weekend to take the win. Yuan had a total of six birdies in his first round on Saturday. Four of those birdies came on some of the more difficult Par 5 holes on the course. Yuan locked in the win on Sunday when he improved his score by advancing 3 strokes below the second place leader. Yuan had the most birdies out of the tournament with a total of 11, and the best Par 4 (3.90) and Par 5 (4.25) performance averages. Second place was taken by Robin Wang, also of Lake Mary, Florida. Wang posted a two day total score of -1 (70+73=143). Wang started the first round off with an impressive score of 70 and had a total of four birdies in the round. Sunday proved to be more difficult for Wang when he added three strokes to his score by only having one birdie and two bogies. Third place was taken by Rigel Fernandes of Mangalore, India. Fernandes was at even par at the end of his two rounds by posting scores of 72 on both days. The highlight of Fernandes’ round was when he eagled the Par 5 5th hole. Fernandes was tied for the weekend with the most eagles with a total of one. Fernandes also had the most pars or better with an average of 91.7%, and a total of 30 pars. In the Girls 15-18 Division, Ailin Li of Windermere, Florida finished 1st. Li posted a two day total score of +5 (Ailin Li). There were many tough conditions that most junior golfers had to compete in, but after her first round, Li had put herself in the perfect position to win with four birdies. Li had the most birdies out of the division with a total of 6. There was a tie for second place between Wen Jia Cao and Mai Dechathipat both of Wellingotn, Fl. Both girls posted a two day total score of +8. Cao shot a 78 in her first round and improved her score to 74 on Sunday. Dechathipat had scores of 75 and 77 in the first and second round respectively. Cao had the most pars with a total of 25.
