Upstate New York Junior Classic
(August 6-7, 2016)
One Swing at a Time
The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour opened the month of August by hosting the Upstate New York Junior Classic at Timber Banks Golf Club & Marina in Baldwinsville, NY. Talk about golf weather, Baldwinsville had plenty to offer and even the high winds couldn’t ruin the perfect weekend. The tour would like to thank Timber Banks Golf Club & Marina for their hospitality, it was a wonderful course and they were great to work with. The top performers and champions from each division received valuable points toward their Junior Golf Scoreboard Ranking. Competitive would be the word to describe this tournament. No lead was safe and no deficit unsurmountable. I hope the golfers had half as much fun as we did!
Boys 16-18

Stephen Hetterich from Rochester, NY came out on top of the boys 16-18 division this weekend. Hetterich won the tournament by two strokes, shooting 160. Nick Barney from Apalachin, NY finished in second place with a two day total of 162. Louis Chen from Columbus, OH finished in third place with a two day total of 163. Chen posted a score of 76 for the first round, the lowest round score for the division. Chen and Hetterich tied for the most pars or better with 22 each. Adam Brandstadt had a 10 hole bogey free streak. The guys took playing for the love of the game to a new level this weekend. All the players seemed to be enjoying themselves at all times, and were very respectful towards each other.
Boys 14-15

The boys 14-15 championship honors go to Drew LaCongo from Holland, NY. LaCongo entered the final round holding a three-stroke lead. He managed to extend that lead to six strokes. Nicholas Adair from Kingston, ON took home the third place trophy with a two day score of 173. LaCongo had the most birdies with 3, he also added an eagle. Adair and LaCongo both managed a 4 hole bogey free streak. The course was difficult, mixed with the wind made for a lot of trouble. All the golfers faced the obstacles head on and emerged victorious.

Johnny Gruninger from Syracuse, NY put together a tremendous tournament and left carrying a championship trophy. Gruninger posted a final round score of 70, the lowest score of any golfer in the entire tournament. He finished with a total score of 154. Gruninger didn’t bogey a single hole on day two, leading to his fourteen stroke improvement from round 1. Cryan recorded the only eagle for the division. All the players seemed to be great friends throughout the tournament, they were also very competitive. Every time they got the chance they shared scores just to get a feel for where each player stood. They were a joy to watch.
