St. Louis Summer Challenge

(July 29-30, 2017)

The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour was at Aberdeen Golf Course for the St. Louis Summer Challenge July 29-30. Players gathered at Aberdeen for a unique team challenge that put a flare on the tournament from the typical stroke play tournaments that the tour uses. There were four teams that consisted of at least five players of any age division and gender. The winning team received exclusive HJGT branded golf bags as well as an invitation to the National Team Championship on November 18-19 at the Mission Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL. The second place team also received an invitation to the Team Championship. The weather throughout the weekend was perfect although the wind on Saturday made it difficult for players to go low. The wind would die down on Sunday which allowed the players to post some terrific scores.       Boys 16-18

For the Boys 16-18 division it was Luke Smith from Covington, TN who would bring home the victory. Luke was a member of team one and a major contributor to team one’s victory. Just like many other players, Luke was able to improve his score on Sunday as the wind played less of a factor. However, a 75 on Saturday was the low round of the day and an extremely impressive score for the conditions. Smith went on to post a 69 on Sunday which again was the low round of the day and good enough to earn himself a comfortable 5 stroke victory. In second place was Zach Williams from Mt. Vernon, IL who also was able to improve his score from Saturday to Sunday. Zach posted scores of 79-70-149 including 4 birdies on Sunday. Williams was able to improve on Sunday by 9 strokes which was very impressive to watch. It was Alex Heib of St. Louis, MO who finished in third place. After posting an 81 with one birdie on Saturday, Alex came back strong on Sunday posting an impressive 71 with 5 birdies which was good enough to earn himself 3rd place. This field put on a show for staff and spectators alike.     Boys 14-15

Taking home first place in the Boys 14-15 age division was Sean Minor of Columbia, MO. Minor was able to improve on his first round posting scores of 80-72-152. Shooting even par on Sunday, Minor was able to earn himself a 3 stroke victory. In second place was Curtis Hastie of St. Louis, MO. Curtis posted consistent scores of 79-76-155. His round on Saturday was the lowest round of his age division despite finishing in second. 79 and 76 were very good scores with the weather considered but in the end he came up just a bit short. In third was Henry Mikula who competed in his first Hurricane event. Henry posted an 81 on Saturday which was a great score leaving him only 2 strokes off the lead. In the end he came up short on Sunday but it was a great weekend overall with a lot of positives to build on in his first event. We look forward to having Henry back soon. This field provided very lively play and was a joy for staff to watch.     Boys 11-13

In the Boys 11-13 age division Ryan Walsh of Clarkson Valley, MO cruised to victory. After posting a very impressive 76 on Saturday, Walsh was able to follow up with a 70 on Sunday to secure the victory. Walsh was able to make 4 birdies on Sunday which was a big factor in his win. In second place was Ian Blome of Weldon Spring, MO who had a nice round on Sunday that included 7 birdies. Blome posted an 80 on Sunday which was a very solid score with the wind playing a big factor. In third place was Reece Scott of Des Peres, MO. Reece had some difficulties on Saturday with the wind but battled back on Sunday shooting 83 which was 5 strokes better than his round on Saturday. Scott was able to correct some mistakes and improve on Sunday which is always great to see. These boys showed maturity beyond their years as they attacked this difficult course.     Girls 14-18

For the Girls 14-18 division it was Aubrey Guyton from Cordova, TN who placed first. Aubrey was tied for first after Saturday but was able to put together a great round on Sunday to secure the win. She posted scores of 84-79-163 for the tournament. Coming in second was Lucy Bloomstran of St. Louis, MO. Lucy played well on Saturday and was tied for the lead going into the final round. She struggled on Sunday but she definitely had a lot of positives to take away from the tournament. She also contributed to the team one victory and earned herself a HJGT golf bag. In third place was Ellie Navarre who had a good round on Saturday that left her just 3 strokes off the lead going into Sunday. She did not play her best on Sunday but still was able to play well enough to take home 3rd place.
