College Corner, OH: (June 14, 2015) The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to College Corner, OH on June 13-14 for the Southern Ohio Junior Challenge. Saturday’s round began right on time at 8:00 AM with warm weather and eager junior golfers. The weather was even better Sunday, with clear and sunny skies, temperatures settling in the 80’s, and a cooling breeze. Add this to the fact that Hueston Woods was in fantastic shape, setting the stage for an amazing two rounds of golf. Trophy winners in all three divisions received an invitation to the 2015 Mid-Season Invitational and additionally received an invitation to the 2015 HJGT National Championship. The top ten finishers in each division received points towards year end honors which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams and the Hurricane Cup, along with Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings for qualified divisions
The Boy’s 15-18 Division was a tight battle both days at Hueston Woods. Nathan Arnold of Milford, OH opened with a 74, good for a 2 shot lead on Union, KY’s Austin Zapp. Zapp would come out firing on Sunday, birdying 3 holes on the front nine and claiming the 27-hole lead. The two would trade pars and bogeys before Arnold would make birdie on the par-3 18th hole to pull even with Zapp at 151 and force a playoff. Arnold would continue his strong play down the stretch by hitting his approach shot onto the green from under a tree to finish the playoff hole with par and a win. 3rd Place finisher Isaac Vock of Loveland, OH played two quality rounds of golf as well. He would lead the field with 5 birdies and an eagle. Vock played well enough to earn a spot in the playoff, but a bogey on the final hole caused him to fall short by a single stroke. The Girl’s 15-18 Division also featured a close race at the top of the leaderboard. Kacie Bradfish (Liberty Township, OH) and Alyssa Burritt (Bellbrook, OH) each shot below par in the first round of play, posting matching 71s. The ladies would continue to successfully attack the flagsticks in the final round to distance themselves from the field. In the end, Bradfish’s efficiency on Hueston Woods’ par 5s would be the difference. Bradfish (146) would average 4.6 strokes on the par 5s, while Burritt (148) would average only 5.6 strokes. Kacie Bradfish’s round would be the lowest of the weekend across all divisions; congratulations to her on her performance at Hueston Woods!
Zane Sullivan would play consistent golf on his way to a comfortable victory at the Southern Ohio Junior Challenge for the Boy’s 13-14 age division. Sullivan, of Charlotte, NC, would finish 80-79 for a first place total of 159. He made an impressive 5 birdies over the two rounds of play. In just his second start of the season, Sullivan improved his round by 14 strokes to claim his first win of the season. Sullivan would average 3.9 on par 3s, 4.3 on par 4s, and 5.2 on par 5s.Cincinnatti, OH’s Henderson would finish in second with a two-day total of 182.
