Sarasota Junior Challenge
(August 6-7, 2016)
Storming to Victory
On Thursday, August 4, 2016, the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour traveled to Sarasota, FL to host the Sarasota Junior Challenge at Laurel Oak Country Club-East. The weather was not ideal as we battled through the side-effects of Tropical Storm Earl. Unfortunately, we lost the fight to Mother Nature and reduced the tournament to a 27-hole competition. The HJGT would like to thank Laurel Oak Country Club staff for allowing us to host our tournament at such a beautiful golf course. Winners in each division received an exemption into the 2016 Tour Championship December 3-4, 2016 at Champions Gate. The top 10 finishers also received points towards year-end honors, which include state teams, ALL HJGT teams, and the Hurricane Cup. Once the first group was sent off hole 1 the players were ready for their chance to fight for their first place trophies.
Boys 16-18 Division
Jonah Manning of Fort Myers, Florida was the champion in the boy’s 16-18 division. Manning was able to take first place after shooting an impressive even par 72 for round 1 and just 1 over 37 for round 2. Manning recorded a division high of 5 birdies, 16 pars, and 6 bogeys for 27 holes of competition. Following close behind Brown was Dalton Plattner (Sarasota, FL), who shot a 83-38 in rounds 1 and 2 respectively. Plattner tied for 2nd place with YuXuan (Daniel) Song (China), who shot 81-40 for a total of 121.
Boys 14-15 Division
Jack Ohara of Longboat Key, Florida took home 1st place in the boys 14-15 division. Ohara had a very solid 27 holes with a division best of 74 (rd. 1) score. Ohara led the division with 21 pars, 2 birdies, and just 4 bogeys to defeat 2nd place finisher Finn Deutz (Sarasota, FL) by 9 strokes. Ohara’s strong mental game helped lead him to victory by staying focused throughout the tough course conditions, tougher weather conditions, and determined competition throughout his division.
Girls 14-18 Division
Anne Yu (Champions Gate, FL) came in 1st place this week with an impressive and tournament best score of 3-under with a total of 105. Yu played a near flawless tournament carding 22 pars, 4 birdies, and a bogey. Yu had tough competition coming from second place winner Nicole Felce (Holiday, FL), who finished the 27 holes at 113 (+5). Not far behind Felce was Holly Davenport (Palm City, FL) who finished the event at 9 over par (117). Yu dominated every category of statistics in this event including total pars, birdies, and scoring average on par 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s. Clearly the unfortunate weather did not phase Anne Yu from performing well.
Boys 11-13 Division
Carson Enright from Longboat Key, Florida led the 27 holes wire-to-wire with a two-day total of 117. Enright began round 2 with a 1 stroke lead over 3rd place finisher Oliver Warren (Lakewood Ranch, FL) and finished 1 stroke better than our 2nd place winner Wei Huang (Hangzhou, China). Enright showcased his mental toughness and consistent ball striking by edging out his competition for the coveted 1st place trophy.
